Tri-County Regional School Board
The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) is the public school board responsible for elementary, junior high, and high schools in Digby County, Yarmouth County, and Shelburne County in Nova Scotia, Canada. TCRCE was formed on April 1 2018 through the Nova Scotia Education Reform Act. It replaced the Tri-County Regional School Board which was established on August 1, 2004, when the province formed two separate Boards out of the former Southwest Regional School Board. Digby County
Digby County is a county in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. History It was named after the Township of Digby; this was named in honour of Rear Admiral Robert Digby, who dispatched HMS ''Atalanta'' to convey Loyalists from New York City in the spring of 1783 to Conway, which became known as Digby, as part of their evacuation and resettlement following the American Revolutionary War. The Crown resettled thousands of Loyalists in Nova Scotia and other areas of Canada. Digby County was established in 1837. Previously, from August 17, 1759, when Nova Scotia was first divided into counties, this area had been part of Annapolis County. In 1861, Digby County was divided into two sessional districts: Digby and Clare. These were eventually incorporated as district municipalities in 1879. Lockeport is a town and port in Shelburne County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is a traditional Nova Scotian fishing town, situated on a peninsula in Allendale Bay. It is connected to the mainland by the Crescent Beach causeway. The area that surrounds the bay is known as the "Ragged Islands." History In 1762, two families from Massachusetts journeyed to Nova Scotia in an effort to find a new colony that was closer to the rich fishing grounds of the Grand Banks. When they found the sheltered Allendale Bay, they knew they had found a gem in the rough. Shelburne, Nova Scotia
Shelburne is a town located in southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada. History Shelburne lies at the southwest corner of Nova Scotia, at roughly the same latitude as Portland, Maine in the United States. The Mi'kmaq call the large and well-sheltered harbour ''Logumkeegan'' or ''Sogumkeagum.'' The first Europeans to make a settlement on these shores were the French Acadians. They set up a small fishing settlement known as Port Razoir in the late 17th century, named after the harbour's resemblance to an open razor. Early European settlers had small subsistence farms, but most of the inhabitants' income from that time to the present has been derived from the sea. The Acadian fishing settlement was abandoned after repeated raids from New England colonists during Queen Anne's War in 1705, in which five Acadians were taken prisoner, and again in 1708. Barrington, Nova Scotia (community)
Barrington is an unincorporated Canadian rural community of about 4,000 people on the northeast corner of Barrington Bay in Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. Barrington is part of the much larger Municipality of the District of Barrington, also wholly within Shelburne County. History Barrington's inhabitants are mostly descendants of the first settlers from Chatham and Harwich on Cape Cod, Massachusetts who emigrated to the area during the 1760s. One such settler was Solomon Kendrick, father of John Kendrick, explorer and maritime fur trader. Solomon moved from Harwich, Cape Cod, to Barrington in the 1760s. There are several interesting historical sites in the second of the villages which have as part of their name Barrington. Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia
Shag Harbour is a small fishing community on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. It is one of several small villages in the Municipality of the District of Barrington, Shelburne County. It has a population of roughly 400-450. Industry in the town centres on lobster fishing, which takes place from November to May. Shag Harbour is home to the Shag Harbour UFO Museum and Chapel Hill Museum. The Chapel Hill Museum (c. 1856) is designated under the provincial Heritage Property Act. The village is served by the Shag Harbour - Bear Point Volunteer Fire Department. Children of the village attend Evelyn Richardson Memorial Elementary School, named for a local author. Clark's Harbour is a town on Cape Sable Island in southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada, located in the Municipality of the District of Barrington in Shelburne County. The main industry is lobster fishing. Owing to this as well as the town's history as a fishing community, the town is noted as the birthplace of the Cape Islander fishing boat. Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School
Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School (YCMHS) is a secondary school located in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is part of the Tri-County Regional School Board and is the only high school in the town of Yarmouth. The high school serves the town of Yarmouth as well as the rest of Yarmouth County. History At a public meeting held in the evening of July 26, 1898, the building was purchased for $8000 by the School Commission to be used as the Yarmouth County Academy. It is a memorial school dedicated to the war dead of Yarmouth Town and County during the First and Second World Wars. On February 20, 1949, the academy was totally destroyed by fire. As the news spread, many students, new and old, gathered in horror to watch it burn to the ground. Port Maitland (population: 503) is a small community in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is near the town of Yarmouth, and very near to the community of Beaver River. Salmon River also very nearby, lies within Digby County. The community covers 81.46 km2. History Port Maitland, was heavily influenced by the Henry Alline's new light Baptist movement of the late 18th century. Both Port Maitland and Beaver River tend to be Baptist in confession and English in ethnic origin. The community is, however, only a short distance away from the primarily Acadian-French speaking, Catholic municipality of Clare in Digby County, as well as from such historically black communities as Hectanooga.
