Treschow (Norwegian Family)
Treschow is a Norwegian family descended from Just Hermansen Treschow, a merchant in Moss. This family is not known to be related to a different Treschow family in Norway. Niels Treschow
Niels Nicolas Treschow (5 September 1751 – 22 September 1833) was a Norwegian philosopher, educator and politician. Biography Treschow was born in Strømsø, now part of Drammen in Buskerud. He was the son of Peter Treschow (1718-1773) who was a merchant. He took his student examation in 1766 and was awarded a Master's Degree in philosophy in 1774. Treschow was rector at the Trondheim Cathedral School from 1774-1780 and later served as an educator in Oslo and Copenhagen. He became a professor at the newly established University of Oslo in 1813 and as one of initially only five professors was influential in forming the university during its first period. Today, the main building of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Oslo bears his name. He served as Minister of Education and Church Affairs 1814–1816, 1817–1819, 1820–1822 and 1823–1825, and member of the Council of State Division in Stockholm 1816–1817, 1819–1820, and 1822–1823. Moss, Norway
is a coastal town and a municipality in Viken county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Moss. The city of Moss was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt) and City in 1720. The rural municipality of Jeløy was merged with the city on 1 July 1943. The former municipality of Rygge was merged into it on January 1, 2020. Its administrative district covers areas east of the town, such as the island of Dillingøy in the lake Vansjø. Parts of the town are located on the peninsula of Jeløy. The city of Moss has 30,723 inhabitants (2012). Name The Old Norse form of the name was . Treschow (Dano-Norwegian Family)
Treschow is a family originating in Denmark and with branches in Norway and Sweden. The family name means "wooden shoe-maker" and the family later counted many merchants in the 17th century and priests in the 18th century. A member of the family, Michael Treschow, bought the status of untitled (lower) nobility in Denmark in 1812, although Norway, where he was resident, abolished the concept of nobility only a few years later. Members of this family have been industrialists and landowners, notably in Vestfold. General history Origin The family may be followed back to Niels Hansen († 1593), who lived in Næstved, Denmark. Halfdan Olaus Christophersen
Halfdan Olaus Christophersen (13 December 1902 – 27 May 1980) was a Norwegian historian, literature researcher and non-fiction writer. Personal life Christophersen was born at Drammen in Buskerud, Norway. He was the son of Tollef Christophersen (1878–1949) and Emma Langager (1880–1962). After graduating artium in Arendal in 1921 he began studying philology at the University of Kristiania. Career Christophersen attended Wadham College at Oxford University under a Norwegian Oxford Scholorship. His doctorate thesis at Wadham College, Oxford was a treatment of John Locke (''A Bibliographical Introduction to the Study of John Locke'' 1932). Christophersen became a Rockefeller Fellow in 1932 and was able to visit universities in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands before finishing at Stanford University in California.
