Three Sad Tigers
''Three Sad Tigers'' ( es, Tres tristes tigres) is a 1968 Chilean drama film directed by Raúl Ruiz. It is an adaptation of the play of the same name by Alejandro Sieveking, which itself was based on the novel '' Tres tristes tigres'' by Cuban writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante. It shared the Golden Leopard award at the Locarno International Film Festival in 1969. Plot The film follows several lower-middle-class, thirtysomething characters in Santiago, Chile. Tito has moved to Santiago in search of a better life and works as a car salesman. However, he is unhappy due to the constant pressure and scrutiny he faces from his boss, Rudy. One weekend, when Tito is supposed to hand over the paperwork to close a car deal, he meets up with his sister Amanda and a stranger named Lucho. Alejandro Sieveking
Alejandro Sieveking Campano (5 September 1934 – 5 March 2020) was a Chilean playwright, theatre director and actor. Career Sieveking was born in the Chilean city of Rengo (in the O'Higgins Region) on 5 September 1934. He performed as an actor on theatrical productions by ''Instituto del Teatro'' (Chile's Theatre Institute), ''Teatro de la Universidad Católica'' (the Catholic University Theatre), ''Teatro del Ángel'' (Angel Theatre Company) and ''Teatro Itinerante'' (Itinerant Theatre). He worked together with Víctor Jara on a number of theatrical and musical projects, including in his album: “La Población” – in which he co-wrote the song “Herminda de la Victoria” with Jara. He was one of the founders of the ''Teatro del Ángel'' (Angel Theatre Company) in Chile and in Costa Rica, where he settled and worked as a political exile. ''Tres tristes tigres'' ( es, Tres tristes tigres, lit=Three Sad Tigers), abbreviated as ''TTT'', is the debut novel by Cuban writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante. The novel was first published in Spain in 1967. It was later translated into English by Donald Gardner and Suzanne Jill Levine and published in 1971 as ''Three Trapped Tigers''. It is considered a classic of the Latin American Boom. Background After Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba in 1959, writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante, who had supported the Cuban Revolution, became a cultural leader. He was appointed as director of '' Lunes de Revolución'', a weekly literary supplement to the Cuban magazine ''Revolución''. Cabrera Infante's relations with the Castro regime deteriorated and the literary supplement was shut down by the government in 1961.
