Trentham Racecourse
Trentham Racecourse is the main thoroughbred horse racecourse for the Wellington city area in New Zealand. It is located in the suburb of Trentham in Upper Hutt, next to Trentham Military Camp. The races are conducted by the Wellington Racing Club. The first race meeting was held there in January 1906. In November 2022 it was reported that a $12.4 million investment from the New Zealand Government's Infrastructure Acceleration Fund would be used in a new 850 home housing development and shopping centre on Trentham Racecourse land. Mayor of Upper Hutt and Wellington Racing Club president Wayne Guppy said it would future proof the Club allowing it to upgrade its facilities and continue to operate, as well as boosting the Upper Hutt economy. Thoroughbred
The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Thoroughbreds are considered " hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit. The Thoroughbred, as it is known today, was developed in 17th- and 18th-century England, when native mares were crossbred with imported Oriental stallions of Arabian, Barb, and Turkoman breeding. All modern Thoroughbreds can trace their pedigrees to three stallions originally imported into England in the 17th and 18th centuries, and to a larger number of foundation mares of mostly English breeding. Desert Gold Stakes
The Desert Gold Stakes is a horse race held by the Wellington Racing Club at Trentham Racecourse named in honor of the great filly, Desert Gold. The horses taking part are 3 year-old fillies which race over 1600 metres. History The race was first held in 1947 when there was two Desert Gold Stakes, the first in January won by Indian Dawn and then another in October won by Regal Gem. It is now held on Wellington Cup day in late January. The race was previously held in March (2003-2005) and late October (up to 2001). The Desert Gold Stakes was raced over a 1500m journey from 2000 - 2005. The 1998 event was raced over 1600m at Hastings. The race is currently a Group 3 event. In the 1980s it held Group 2 status. Tauherenikau Racecourse
Tauherenikau Racecourse is a racecourse near, Featherston. It is owned by The Wairarapa Racing Club It is set in 110 acres of native trees. Wairarapa Racing Club The Wairarapa Racing Club was formed on 21 April 1864 and held meetings elsewhere in the province. Work began on the Tauherenikau Racecourse in 1866 and was completed in 1874. Its first meeting at Tauherenikau was on January 26/27, 1874. In 2023 the Club has three galloping meetings, the New Year meeting on 2 January, a Waitangi Day meeting (6 February) and Sunday 6 November. Masterton Jockey Club The Masterton Opaki Jockey Club was formed in 1872. Racing began on the Opaki Race Course on Boxing Day in 1885 with trains traveling from Wellington for the occasion. On 12 August 1896 the name was changed to the Masterton Racing Club and on 23 October 1987 the last meeting was held on the Opaki Course which then became a training centre. Riccarton Park Racecourse
Riccarton Park Racecourse is the main thoroughbred horse racecourse for the Christchurch city area in New Zealand. History The Canterbury Jockey Club was established in 1854 and held its first meeting at Hagley Park in Easter 1855. The Riccarton racecourse was reserved as a public recreation ground by the Canterbury Provincial Council in 1858 and leased to the Jockey Club. Riccarton Racecourse became the home of the New Zealand Cup in 1867. The Tea House and the Public Grandstand were designed by local architects, Alfred and Sidney Luttrell. Ellerslie Racecourse
Ellerslie Racecourse is the main racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand, for thoroughbred racehorses. It is an undulating, grass circuit in the suburb of Ellerslie, with a circumference of just under 1,900 metres. Racing is conducted in a clockwise (right-handed) direction. History Horses have raced at Ellerslie since 1857 when Robert Graham hosted a race meeting on his property, on the site which is now Ellerslie Racecourse. The Auckland Racing club then purchased thirty-six hectares of land from Graham in 1872 on which the course is situated. The first race meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was held at Ellerslie on 25 May 1874. At this time the racecourse was a considerable distance outside the city and it took Aucklanders up to several hours to get to the course by carriage. Linda Jones (jockey)
Linda Christine Jones (born 1952) is a New Zealand former thoroughbred horse racing jockey. She was the first woman to be granted a race licence in New Zealand in 1977 and the first in Australasia to achieve four victories in a single day the following year. Jones finished second in the 1978/1979 Jockey Premiership with 18 winners by Christmas 1978. She later became the first woman to ride a Derby winner in each of the Australasia, Europe, and North America continents and the first female to beat professional male entrants at an Australian-registered event. Injury prompted Jones to retire in 1980; she had achieved 65 victories within 18 months. She is an inductee of both the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame and the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. The New Zealand Oaks is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old fillies run at set weights over a distance of 2400 metres ( miles) on the third Saturday of March every year at Trentham Racecourse in Wellington, New Zealand. Thorndon Mile
The Thorndon Mile (formally WRC George Adams Handicap) is a Group One (G1) Thoroughbred horse race contested at Trentham Racecourse by the Wellington Racing Club. The race is run on Wellington Cup day, traditionally the last Saturday of January. This race was known as the WRC George Adams Handicap until 1983. It was also known as the Jarden Mile or Jarden Morgan Mile while sponsored by that organisation over the 1984-1991 period. Later sponsors have included Hutt Valley Cartage. The Wellington Cup is a Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race in New Zealand held annually in late January at Trentham Racecourse in Trentham by the Wellington Racing Club. History Inaugurated in 1874, the Wellington Cup has been raced over various distances: * 2 miles : 1874-1889 * miles : 1890-1941 * 2 miles : 1942-1973 * 3200 metres : 1974-2008 * 2400 metres : 2009-2015 * 3200 metres : 2016 onwards There were two prior Wellington Cups in 1867 and 1868.
