Treloar School
Treloar School and College is a non-maintained residential and day special school and college for disabled children and young people aged from 2 to 25 in Holybourne near Alton, Hampshire, UK. Aims and governance The school and college aims to provide enabling education to the disabled, using a combination of teaching, care, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech and language therapy. They are administered by Treloar Trust, a registered charity. The school, college, and trust are often referred to singly or collectively as "Treloar's", and indeed the official motto is "Treloar's: Enabling Education". History In 1907, the then Lord Mayor of the City of London, Sir William Purdie Treloar, set up a 'Cripples' Fund' as his mayoral appeal. His aim was to build a hospital and school outside the city for children with non-pulmonary tuberculosis. Rosaleen (Rosie) Moriarty-Simmonds (born 1960) is a British businesswoman, artist and disability rights campaigner. She was born without arms or legs after her mother was prescribed thalidomide in pregnancy. Education She attended Ysgol Erw'r Delyn, a special school in Penarth, and from age 14 Treloar School in Alton, at that time the only school in the UK to offer an academic education for students with disabilities. She was the first disabled student to enrol at Cardiff University, graduating in 1985 with a BSc degree in psychology. Benjamin David "Ben" Rushgrove (born 23 February 1988 in Bath) is a British sprint runner with cerebral palsy and hearing impairment. He runs in the T36 classification, and set a world record for the T36 200m at the 2007 Visa Paralympic World Cup, becoming the first athlete to achieve under 25 seconds in the event. He represented Great Britain in the T36 100m and 200m at the 2008 Summer Paralympics. Ben won a silver medal in the T36 100m at the Paralympic Games in Beijing 2008 in a time of 12.35 seconds. Julie Mare Fernandez (born 20 April 1974 in Hampstead, London) is a British actress and model best known for her role as Brenda in the BBC comedy ''The Office''. Paul Darke
Paul Darke CF (born 20 January 1962) is a British academic, artist, filmmaker, podcaster and disability rights activist. Darke is an expert on disability in film and politics. Early life and education Born in Frimley, Camberley, Darke attended special education boarding schools in Kent and Hampshire. He left the Shaftesbury Society school with little to no qualifications. In interviews, he credits an encounter with a fellow patient who was a psychologist during an unforeseen stay in hospital, to return to education. He also met his future wife, Claire, who was working there as a nurse. After a few years out of education, he went to study at the then Wolverhampton Polytechnic at the age of 23, doing a computer access course for disabled people. Laurence Clark is a British stand-up comedian, writer, actor, presenter, and disability rights campaigner. Laurence was born with cerebral palsy and uses his line of work to alter the general public's perceptions of disabled people. Spike Breakwell (born Colin James Breakwell on 13 June 1968) is a British comedian. When he was four months old he became disabled through taking oral polio vaccine which caused a two-week coma.
