Trelech
Trelech (Welsh: ''Tre-lech'') is a village in the parish of Tre-lech a'r Betws, Carmarthenshire, in south-west Wales. It is also the name of the community. Trelech is located some 10 miles north-west of Carmarthen and 6.5 miles south of Newcastle Emlyn. Description The population taken at the 2011 census was 745. The community is bordered by the communities of: Cenarth; Cynwyl Elfed; Abernant; Meidrim; and Llanwinio, all being in Carmarthenshire; and by Clydau in Pembrokeshire. The village is home to the Welsh-medium Ysgol Hafodwenog (Hafodwenog Community Primary School), which has around 60 pupils aged 4 to 11, and was opened in 1972 to serve the children of the surrounding settlements of Alma, Bryn Iwan, Cilrhedyn, Dinas, Gelliwen, Pandy, Penybont, and Talog, as well as those of Trelech itself. Trelech (electoral Ward)
Trelech is the name of an electoral ward for Carmarthenshire County Council in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is represented by one county councillor. Description As well as the community of Trelech, the ward also covers the neighbouring communities of Abernant, Llanwinio, Meidrim and Newchurch and Merthyr. It includes the villages and settlements of Abernant, Blaenwaun, Cwmbach, Drefach, Felin-pandy, Gellywen, Llanwinio, Merthyr, Pen-y-bont, Talog and Trelech. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 2,072. A 2019 boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales recommended the Newchurch and Merthyr community be added to the Trelech ward. Newchurch and Merthyr had previously been part of the neighbouring Cynwyl Elfed ward. The change was to take effect from the May 2022 local elections. Cynwyl Elfed
Cynwyl Elfed (; sometimes Conwyl and formerly anglicised as Conwil Elvet or Conwil in Elvet) is a village and community in the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales. The community includes the villages of Cynwyl Elfed, Blaenycoed and Cwmduad. It is situated about north of Carmarthen and had a population of 953 in 2001, increasing to 1,044 at the 2011 Census. The area around the village has yielded a significant number of Roman artefacts, including a statue of Diana. It was the most important centre of the commote of Elfed in the Middle Ages. Cynwyl Elfed transmitting station stands on high ground to the north of the village. Governance An electoral ward of the same name exists. This ward stretches south to Newchurch and Merthyr. There is a community council of the same name and also the ward is represented by one councillor in Carmarthenshire County Council. David Nott
David Malcolm Nott (born 1956) is a Welsh consultant surgeon who works mainly in London hospitals as a general and vascular surgeon, but also volunteers to work in disaster and war zones. Having recognised that training others could greatly increase his capacity to help, Nott established the David Nott Foundation, along with his wife Elly, to organise training in emergency surgery for others working in war and disaster zones. He has been honoured for this dangerous work and is now often styled the " Indiana Jones of surgery". Education and family Nott was born in Carmarthen in 1956 and lived with his grandparents at Trelech, near Carmarthen, until the age of four. He then lived in the Midlands and Rochdale from where he attended Hulme Grammar School. His father, Malcolm George Nott, was born in Burma and educated in Madras, India, and was half-Indian and half-Burmese. Perceval Gibbon
Perceval Gibbon (4 November 1879 – 30 May 1926) was an author and journalist, serving for the Rand Daily Mail in South Africa, as well as for other publications. Gibbon had travelled to South Africa in 1898, moved to the war front and became the representative of a syndicate of colonial newspapers at the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War. He is best remembered for his short stories, which often contained an ironic twist at the end. Gibbon's influence on the work of later South African authors has been acknowledged. For instance, the fictional narrator of ''Vrouw Grobelaar's Leading Cases'' (1905) is said to be a forerunner of Herman Charles Bosman's character Oom Schalk Lourens. David Rees (Y Cynhyrfwr)
The Reverend David Rees (14 November 1801– 31 March 1869) was a Welsh Congregational minister of Capel Als chapel Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, and an editor of a radical Welsh language Nonconformist periodical titled ''Y Diwygiwr'' (The Reformer). Known as 'Y Cynhyrfwr' ('The Agitator'), he held radical political views and opposed the relationship between the Established Church and the state. Early life Rees, son of Bernard and Anna Rees, was born and raised on the Gelli Lwyd farm in the parish of Trelech, Carmarthenshire. Whilst a child he worked on his family's farm as well as spending some time with the local blacksmith, as an apprentice. Rees did not have any formal education as a child but was instructed at the Sunday school and participated in Christian worship regularly at home with his family. Meidrim is a community some west of Carmarthen and north of St Clears in Carmarthenshire, Wales. Llanwinio
Llanwinio is a community in Carmarthenshire, Wales, north of the hamlet of Gellywen. The population recorded at the 2011 census was 448. The 2011 census showed 46.0% of the population could speak Welsh, a fall from 62.3% in 2001. In 1844 Samuel Lewis's ''A Topographical Dictionary of Wales'' described Llanwinio as being divided into two sections – an Eastern Division and a Western Division, with a population of 1035: with a population of 422 in the Eastern and 613 in the Western Division. The community is bordered by the communities of Trelech, Meidrim, Llangynin and Llanboidy, all in Carmarthenshire, and by Crymych and Clydau, both in Pembrokeshire. Cenarth
Cenarth () is a village, parish and community in Carmarthenshire, on the border between Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire, and close to the border with Pembrokeshire, Wales. It stands on the banks of the River Teifi, east of Cardigan and west of Newcastle Emlyn, and features the Cenarth Falls, a popular visitor attraction, and several other listed structures including an 18th-century corn mill incorporating the National Coracle Centre. History and governance The ancient parish extended south of the river, and included the town of Newcastle Emlyn. Newcastle Emlyn
Newcastle Emlyn ( cy, Castellnewydd Emlyn) is a town on the River Teifi, straddling the counties of Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire in West Wales. It is also a community entirely within Carmarthenshire, bordered by those of Llangeler and Cenarth, also in Carmarthenshire, and by Llandyfriog in Ceredigion. Adpar is the part of town on the Ceredigion side of the River Teifi. It was formerly called Trefhedyn and was an ancient Welsh borough in its own right.
