Travis H. Tomlinson
Travis Hocutt "Tommy" Tomlinson (September 17, 1913 – May 11, 2012) was mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina from 1965 to 1969. Tomlinson was married to Margaret Waddell Tomlinson and had two sons, Travis H. Tomlinson Jr and William Parker Tomlinson. In 1961 he was elected to serve on the Raleigh City Council. He was sworn in on July 3. Prior to serving as mayor, Tomlinson founded Mayview Convalescent Home in Raleigh in 1957. The mayor of Raleigh is the mayor of Raleigh, the state capital of North Carolina, in the United States. Raleigh operates with council-manager government, under which the mayor is elected separately from Raleigh City Council, of which they are the eighth member. Under Raleigh's original 1795 charter, the equivalent of a mayor was the 'Intendant of Police' (a title borrowed from France). The first person to hold the office was John Haywood. He was elected by the city Board of Commissioners (who were themselves appointed by the North Carolina General Assembly). Starting in 1803, intendants were elected annually by all free men owning land within the city limits, including free African-Americans. The Raleigh Times
The ''Raleigh Times'' was the afternoon newspaper in Raleigh, North Carolina. The history of the paper dates back to the ''Evening Visitor'', first published in 1879. The ''Visitor'' later bought out other rival afternoon papers, the ''Daily Press'' in 1895 and the ''Evening Times'' in 1897. In the midst of and after the acquisitions, the paper was variously known as the ''Press-Visitor'' and the ''Times-Visitor'' before eventually settling on the ''Raleigh Times'' by 1901 following purchase by John C. Drewry, who later moved the fledgling paper to its longtime home at 14 East Hargett Street in downtown Raleigh. After the paper initially went bankrupt and suspended publication in 1910, it was sold to John A. Park who had reportedly made the purchase by depleting the city's gold supply.
