Travers is a hamlet (place), hamlet in southern Alberta, Canada within Vulcan County. It is located approximately southwest of Alberta Highway 1, Highway 1 and southwest of Brooks, Alberta, Brooks. History Travers was once a booming community along the Canadian Pacific Railway between Medicine Hat and Aldersyde, Alberta, Aldersyde. Travers gets its name from one of the railway's surveyors in 1914. The first settlers to the area were Pete Brodie, William Dunlop, A. Keene, Tom Emelson, Fred VanHolm, J.W. Murphy, and Sidney Thurlow. Travers' first grain elevator was built by Home Elevator Co. in 1914 next to the new railway, followed by an Ogilvie Flour Mills, Ogilvie and United Grain Growers elevator. Travers River
The Travers River is in the South Island of New Zealand. It lies within the borders of the Nelson Lakes National Park. The valley through which the river flows is popular with trampers and is part of the Travers-Sabine tramping circuit, which follows a major portion of the river, starting from Kerr Bay at Saint Arnaud and, after crossing the Travers Saddle (1787 metres), descends the valley of the Sabine River. The river feeds into Lake Rotoiti. It is not a navigable waterway due to its small size and numerous rocky cascades. The lower reaches of the river lie in open tussock which was burnt and grazed by early European settlers. Further upstream the river flows through unmodified beech forest. The upper reaches are in subalpine scrub above the bushline. The Travers Stakes is an American Grade I Thoroughbred horse race held at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. It is nicknamed the "Mid-Summer Derby" and is the third-ranked race for American three-year-olds according to international classifications, behind only the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. First held in 1864, it is the oldest stakes race in the United States specifically for 3-year-olds, and was named for William R. Travers, the president of the old Saratoga Racing Association. His horse, Kentucky, won the first running of the Travers. The race was not run in 1896, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1911, and 1912. The race is the highlight of the summer race meeting at Saratoga, just as the Belmont Stakes is the highlight of the spring meeting at Belmont Park. Haunches-in, also called travers or ''tête au mur'' ("head to the wall" in French), is a lateral movement used in the dressage discipline of horse training. It has a close cousin, haunches-out, renvers, or ''croupe au mur'' ("rump to the wall"), that is slightly more difficult. Both movements are ''four-track'', meaning they produce four lines of hoof prints in the sand, as opposed to the usual two seen if the horse is straight and to the ''three-track'' shoulder-in. In haunches-in, the horse bends its hindquarters slightly to the inside of the arena, away from the arena wall, so that the horse is ''bent in the direction of movement''. The front legs and shoulders should not move from the original track. The Priroda (russian: Природа; en, Nature) (TsM-I, 77KSI, 11F77I) module was the seventh and final module of the Mir Space Station. Its primary purpose was to conduct Earth resource experiments through remote sensing and to develop and verify remote sensing methods.
