Transport infrastructure in Guinea-Bissau is basic, with most roads outside the capital Bissau being unpaved. Railways There are no railways in Guinea-Bissau. At the Port of Bissau, there was a small cargo railway working from the late 19th century into the 1940s. In 1998 an agreement was signed between Portugal and Guinea-Bissau for construction of a railway to Guinea, but the outbreak of the Guinea-Bissau Civil War in 1998 made these plans impossible. Economic Community Of West African States
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS; also known as in French and Portuguese) is a regional political union, political and economic union of fifteen countries located in West Africa. Collectively, these countries comprise an area of , and in 2015 had an estimated population of over 349 million. Considered one of the pillar trade bloc, regional blocs of the continent-wide African Economic Community (AEC), the stated goal of ECOWAS is to achieve "collective self-sustainability, self-sufficiency" for its member states by creating a single large trade bloc by building a full economic and trading union. Air Bissau was the national airline of Guinea-Bissau, operating services from its base at Osvaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau. History Transportes Aéreos da Guiné Portuguesa (TAGP) was founded in 1960 to operate flights within Portuguese Guinea as its flag carrier. Services on routes from Bissau to external destinations like Dakar, Ilha do Sal and Praia were inaugurated not long after foundation. A de Havilland Heron and two de Havilland Dragon Rapides were operating on the routes by 1961. By 1968 the airline was operating two de Havilland Herons, three Dornier Do 27s, one Cessna 206, one Cessna 172 and one Auster. Bubaque Airport is an airport serving the island town of Bubaque, in Guinea-Bissau. It is the Bijagos Archipelago's only airfield. The airport is on the north end of the island.
