Transport in Belize mostly consists of bus transportation on Belize's roads. There are some navigable waterways. Public transport Most Belizeans travel the country using public buses as their primary form of transportation. In the larger towns and cities, such as Belize City or Belmopan, there are bus terminals. In smaller places, there are bus stops. However, the most common way of catching a bus is by flagging it down on the road. On the Northern and George Price Highways, bus service is more frequent than on smaller highways and other roads. In some locations, like small towns, buses may run only once a day. Buses are classified as either Regular runs (usual prices) or Express runs (faster, for slightly higher prices). Some Belizeans prefer riding bikes due to traffic, or the time of day. Many buses are Greyhounds or school buses, although newer express buses travel the two main highways. Stann Creek Railway
The Stann Creek Railway was used from 1908 to 1938 as a long gauge narrow gauge railway from Commerce Bight to Middlesex, Belize, Middlesex in Belize. Background The British Honduras Syndicate opened a mule-drawn railway in 1892 from its main office in Melinda to Sacred Heart Church (Belize), Sacred Heart Church at the pier in Stann Creek Town, which proved to be useful. Belize City Municipal Airport
Sir Barry Bowen Municipal Airport (formerly Belize City Municipal Airport) is an airport serving Belize City, Belize. It is only one mile from the city center, and is more centrally located to the city than is Belize City International Airport. It mostly provides travel to Belize's cayes, allowing faster passage to the cayes than by boat or water taxi. The airport is named after the late Belizean politician and entrepreneur Barry Bowen. The head office of Maya Island Air is on the airport. Tropic Air also has a terminal at this airport with multiple flights every day. Facilities In 2012, a project to upgrade and modernize the airport was initiated. Improvements included extending the runway, constructing a new access road, adding a taxiway, and installing a new lighting system. Ladyville
Ladyville is the largest village in the country of Belize, eight miles northwest of Belize City in the Belize District. The Philip Goldson Highway connects Ladyville to Belize City. History Although originally a separate settlement, Ladyville has become a suburb of Belize City, with many of its residents commuting to the city on a daily basis. Demographics Ladyville recorded a population of 5,458 in the 2010 national census. The total number of households are 1,227 with an average size of 3.6 persons. Geography Ladyville is located on the north bank of the Belize River and is approximately 5 miles inland from the Caribbean Sea. Big Creek or Cala Grande is a deep-water port facility on the Caribbean Sea in Belize's Toledo District (just south of the boundary with Stann Creek District), constructed in the 1990s.
