Transgender Archive
The Transgender Archive began as the personal collection of Cristan Williams, and was donated to the Transgender Foundation of America in 2008 where the collection has continued to grow. The archive has grown to encompass museum quality artifacts and ephemera, recording hundreds of years of transgender history throughout the world. The Transgender History Archive is housed in the TG Center in Houston and is open to the public. The archive is one of many organisations thanked by influential LGBTQ+ writer, Leslie Feinburg. Digital Transgender Archive
The Digital Transgender Archive (DTA) is an online resource based at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, in collaboration with more than sixty international colleges, universities, nonprofit organizations, and private collections. It was established to enable researchers to locate and make use of transgender-related materials in digital and physical collections. It serves as a finding aid for archival materials and an online hub for born-digital materials and digitized historical materials. Transgender Foundation Of America
Transgender Foundation of America (TFA) is a Houston, Texas-based non-profit organization A nonprofit organization (NPO) or non-profit organisation, also known as a non-business entity, not-for-profit organization, or nonprofit institution, is a legal entity organized and operated for a collective, public or social benefit, in co ... whose mission is to advance the quality of life for transgender people. TFA engages in community development through education and outreach resources. Additionally, TFA runs a Transgender Archive and museum space called the Transgender Archives. Susan Stryker
Susan O'Neal Stryker (born 1961) is an American professor, historian, author, filmmaker, and theorist whose work focuses on gender and human sexuality. She is a professor of Gender and Women's Studies, former director of the Institute for LGBT Studies, and founder of the Transgender Studies Initiative at the University of Arizona, and is currently on leave while holding an appointment as Barbara Lee Distinguished Chair in Women's Leadership at Mills College. Stryker serves on the Advisory Council of METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) and the Advisory Board of the Digital Transgender Archive. ''Transgender History'' is a non-fiction book by professor Susan Stryker that provides a concise history of transgender people in the United States from the middle of the 19th century to the 2000s. The book was published in 2008 by Seal Press, with a revised edition released in 2017. Content The book is split up into five chapters, most of which deal with a particular period of history. Each chapter also features multiple "breakout sections" that define new terminology used in that chapter. A transgender (often abbreviated as trans) person is someone whose gender identity or gender expression does not correspond with their sex assigned at birth. Many transgender people experience dysphoria, which they seek to alleviate through transitioning, often adopting a different name and set of pronouns in the process. Additionally, they may undergo sex reassignment therapies such as hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery to more closely align their primary and secondary sex characteristics with their gender identity. LGBT Culture In Houston
Houston has a large and diverse LGBT population and is home to the 4th largest gay pride parade in the nation. Houston has the largest LGBT population of any city in the state of Texas. History According to Ray Hill, a Montrose resident quoted in the ''Houston Press'', before the 1970s, the city's gay bars were spread around Downtown Houston and what is now Midtown Houston. Gays and lesbians needed to have a place to socialize after the closing of the gay bars. They began going to Art Wren, a 24-hour restaurant in Montrose, a community of empty nesters and widows. LGBT community members were attracted to Montrose as a neighborhood after encountering it while patronizing Art Wren, and they began to gentrify the neighborhood and assist the widows with the maintenance of their houses.
