Trainer (TV Series)
''Trainer'' was a British television series transmitted by the BBC between 1991 and 1992. It was produced by Gerard Glaister as a follow-up to the long-running series ''Howards' Way''. Filmed in and around the village of Compton near Newbury, the series was set in the world of horse racing. It starred Mark Greenstreet as Mike Hardy, an aspiring horse trainer keen to set up his own stables. Other major characters included local gambler John Grey (David McCallum) and widow Rachel Ware ( Susannah York). The first series of 13 episodes was given the prime time Sunday night slot on BBC1 which had previously been occupied by another Glaister creation ''Howards' Way'' and a horse-racing storyline from that earlier programme provided much of the inspiration for ''Trainer''. However, with ratings of around 6 million, the second series was reduced to ten episodes and shown on Wednesday evenings. Gerard Glaister
John Leslie Glaister DFC (21 December 1915 – 5 February 2005), known as Gerard or Gerrard Glaister, was a British television producer and director best known for his work with the BBC. Amongst his most notable successes as a producer were ''Colditz'', '' The Brothers'', '' Secret Army'' and ''Howards' Way''. After studying at RADA, Glaister made his West End debut in 1939. With the outbreak of war, he joined the Royal Air Force, commissioned as Pilot Officer on 8 September 1939 and initially flying a Blenheim bomber. He later served as a photo reconnaissance pilot in 208 Squadron RAF in the Western Desert, initially flying Westland Lysanders. It was during these latter duties that he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 6 October 1942, for a hazardous reconnaissance flight in an unarmed Hurricane at extremely low level across the Italian front line. David Wayne Spade (born July 22, 1964) is an American actor, stand-up comedian, television host, and writer. Don Warrington
Don Warrington MBE (born Donald Williams, 23 May 1951) is a Trinidadian-born British actor. He is best known for playing Philip Smith in the ITV sitcom ''Rising Damp'' (1974–78), and Commissioner Selwyn Patterson in the BBC detective series '' Death in Paradise'' (2011–present). He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours.
