A train game or railway game is a board game that represents the construction and operation of railways. Train games often are highly involved hobby games that take several hours to play. Like wargames, train games represent a relatively small niche in the games market. A very popular example of a Train Game would be '' Ticket to ride.'' Not every game with a train in it is a "train game". ''Rail Baron'' is a railroad board game for 3 to 6 players. ''Rail Baron'' was initially published in the 1970s under the name ''Boxcars'' by the original designers R.S. Erickson and T.F. Erickson, Jr. It was soon acquired, renamed and reissued by Avalon Hill. Gameplay ''Rail Baron'' is played on a map of the United States on which the routes of 28 historic railroads, such as the Baltimore & Ohio and the Southern Pacific have been marked. A wargame is a strategy game in which two or more players command opposing armed forces in a realistic simulation of an armed conflict. Origins Game Fair
Origins Game Fair is an annual gaming convention that was first held in 1975. Since 1996, it has been held in Columbus, Ohio at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Origins is run by The Game Manufacturers Association (GAMA). Origins was chartered to serve gaming in general, including wargaming and miniatures gaming. Origins is the site of the annual Origins Awards ceremony. For many years, the Charles S. Roberts Awards for historical boardgames were presented at Origins, but these are now presented at the World Boardgaming Championships. World Boardgaming Championships
The World Boardgaming Championships is a convention held yearly since 1999 by the Boardgame Players Association. It was previously held in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but it moved to the Seven Springs Mountain Resort in 2016. It is next scheduled for July 24 to August 1, 2021, at Seven Springs Mountain Resort near Pittsburgh, PA. This convention replaced Avaloncon, which had been run from 1991 to 1998 by Avalon Hill. Each year, the convention pulls approximately 2,000 people from around the world to compete to be named champion of their favorite games. The 100 best-attended games from the previous convention (the “Century”) are scheduled, with additional games added by vote of BPA members and through sponsorships. A gaming convention is a gathering centered on role-playing games, collectible card games, miniatures wargames, board games, video games, or other types of games. These conventions are typically two or three days long, and often held at either a university or in a convention center hotel. The largest gaming convention, Spiel, is a trade fair held in Essen, Germany that focuses on German-style board games and RPGs.
