Hiawassee, Georgia
Hiawassee is the county seat of Towns County, Georgia, United States. The community's population was 880 at the 2010 census. Its name is derived from the Cherokee—or perhaps Creek—word ''Ayuhwasi'', which means meadow, (A variant spelling, "Hiwassee," is used for the local river and some other Appalachian place names.) Hiawassee is also known in the novel "Restart" by Gordon Korman. History A United States fur trade factory was situated here between 1807 and 1811. Settled ''circa'' 1820, Hiawassee was designated seat of the newly formed Towns County in 1856. It was incorporated as a town in 1870 and as a city in 1916, after settlers violently removed the Cherokee communities living there prior in a night of massacre in 1776. Hiawassee was originally inhabited by predominantly Cherokee-speaking peoples, but the myth that the town was named after a Cherokee or otherwise Native American princess is false and is as mythical as the Cherokee princess herself. Towns County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,493. Its county seat is Hiawassee. The county was created on March 6, 1856, and named for United States lawyer, legislator, and politician George W. Towns. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (3.2%) is water. Tate City is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community and census-designated place in Towns County, Georgia, Towns County, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, United States. It was founded as a mining and logging community. The community was named after one Mr. Tate, a businessperson in the local lumber industry. Tate City sits in a scenic valley along the upper Tallulah River, just south of the Georgia-North Carolina border. Young Harris is a city in Towns County, Georgia, United States. The population was 899 at the 2010 census. Young Harris is home to Young Harris College, after which it was named. Geography Young Harris is located at (34.934233, -83.847681). The city is located at the junction of U.S. Route 76/Georgia State Route 515 (Zell Miller Mountain Parkway) and Georgia State Route 66. U.S. 76/GA-515 run through the center of town from west to east, with GA-515 splitting off to the north in the eastern part of the city from U.S. 76. U.S. 76 leads east to Hiawassee, the Towns County seat, and southwest (with GA-515) to Blairsville. GA-66 leads northwest from Young Harris to its end at the Georgia-North Carolina state line. Towns County High School
Towns County High School is a public high school in Hiawassee, Georgia. It is part of the Towns County School District. The school is at 1400 U.S. Route 76. The school colors are blue and white and the Indians are the school's mascot. The school district is predominantly white, the high school has a higher than state average graduation rate and a lower than state average college preparedness and advanced courses participation rate. Jerry Anthony Taylor, Towns County's historian, taught at the school for 32 years. The school hosts the annual Battle of the States basketball tournament.
