Tours Métropole Val de Loire is the ''métropole'', an intercommunal structure, centred on the city of Tours. It is located in the Indre-et-Loire department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, central France. It was created in March 2017, replacing the previous ''Communauté urbaine Tour(S) Plus''. Tours ( , ) is one of the largest cities in the region of Centre-Val de Loire, France. It is the Prefectures in France, prefecture of the Departments of France, department of Indre-et-Loire. The Communes of France, commune of Tours had 136,463 inhabitants as of 2018 while the population of the whole functional area (France), metropolitan area was 516,973. Tours sits on the lower reaches of the Loire, between Orléans and the Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic coast. Saint-Pierre-des-Corps () is a commune in the French department of Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire, France. It is located about 4 km (2.5 mi) from Tours. During the French Revolution, it was called ''La Clarté-Républicaine''. Population Transportation Located on the eastern edge of Tours, Saint-Pierre-des-Corps station is a major hub in the French railway network, connecting the LGV Atlantique, used by high-speed trains traveling from Paris to Nantes, Bordeaux, and Toulouse. The station at Tours itself is a terminus station through which trains cannot pass, so trains that do not terminate at Tours tend to avoid it entirely, leaving Saint-Pierre-des-Corps as the principal long distance station for the entire metropolitan area. Saint-Avertin
Saint-Avertin () is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department in central France. History In the Gallo-Roman times, a hamlet called Vinciacum was set up near quarries where stones required for the building of Caesarodonum (Tours) were extracted. The village took later the name of Vençay. In 1162, St. Thomas Beckett, Archbishop of Canterbury, took part to a council in Tours with a Scottish monk named Aberdeen (c. 1120-1180). Becket was murdered in the cathedral of Canterbury upon King Henry II's request in 1170. Aberdeen decided to come back to Touraine and lived as an hermit in the wood of Cangé. The hermit, locally known as Avertin, became famous for his healing skills, especially against headache. The inhabitants of Vençay asked him to be their parish priest, which he accepted. After his death, he was buried in the parish church, which became a place of pilgrimage. Vençay was renamed Saint-Avertin in 1371.
