The , also known simply as , is a Shoot 'em up#Bullet hell, bullet hell shoot 'em up video game series created by one-man indie game, independent Japanese Doujin soft, ''doujin'' soft developer Team Shanghai Alice. Since 1995, the team's member, ZUN (video game developer), Jun'ya "ZUN" Ōta, has independently developed programming, graphics, writing, and music for the series, self-publishing 18 mainline games and six Spin-off (media), spin-offs . , known by his pseudonym ZUN, is a Japanese composer and video game developer best known for developing and self-publishing the ''Touhou Project'' video game series through the dojin group Team Shanghai Alice, of which he is the only member. In 2010, the Guinness World Records called the ''Touhou Project'' "the most prolific fan-based shooter series" ever created. ZUN is also known as the Hakurei Kannushi (博麗神主), which is also the name he uses for his Twitter account. Early life ZUN was born in Hakuba on March 18, 1977, and described himself as a "normal countryside kid." His first exposure to video games was in 1982-1983, when he played the Game & Watch and arcade games from Hakuba ski resorts. Later, his parents bought him a Famicom Disk System (an add-on for the Nintendo Entertainment System exclusive to Japan).
