Tottenville, Staten Island
Tottenville is a neighborhood on the South Shore of Staten Island, New York City. It is the southernmost settlement in both New York City and New York State. Tottenville is bounded on three sides by water: the south side abuts New York Bight while the west and north sides are bordered by Arthur Kill. Nassau Place, Bethel Avenue and Page Avenue form the neighborhood's eastern border. The settlement was originally named ''Bentley Manor'' by one of its first settlers, Captain Christopher Billop (1638–1726), a member of the Royal Navy, after his own ship. In 1869 it was renamed as Tottenville after John Totten and his prominent local family of that name, some of whom served as Loyalists under Billop during the American Revolutionary War. Tottenville High School
Tottenville High School is located at 100 Luten Avenue, in Huguenot, Staten Island, New York. Tottenville H.S. is in Administrative District 31, and is operated by the New York City Department of Education. The school's principal is Gina Battista, who assumed the role in 2020. Tottenville H.S. is within walking distance of the Huguenot station of the Staten Island Railway system. History Tottenville High School was established in 1898. Tottenville High School was originally located in the building now home to Totten Intermediate School 34 (I.S. 34). In 1937, Dr. Mary E. Meade was appointed principal of the school, becoming the first woman principal of a NYC co-educational school. In 1972, the school moved to its current location in Huguenot. In November 1987, Tottenville was selected as a "School of Excellence" by the U.S. Department of Education. John P. Tuminaro was principal from 1999 until his retirement in June 2013. Huguenot, Staten Island
Huguenot is a neighborhood on the South Shore, Staten Island, South Shore of Staten Island, New York City. Originally named "Bloomingview", it was later named for the Huguenots, led by Daniel Perrin, who settled in the area during the late 17th and early 18th centuries to escape religious persecution.
