Tote Du Crow
Tote Du Crow (also known as George Skyrock or Shyroch) was a film actor and circus performer who acted in many silent films during the early days of Hollywood. Biography Tote was born in Watsonville, California, to parents of Castilian and French origins. According to some accounts, as children, Tote and his brother Daniel ran away from home to join the circus; other sources say their father apprenticed them out to a circus showman. Tote Du Crow portrayed Bernardo in the silent ''Zorro'' films. Gene Sheldon later popularized this role for Disney in the late 1950s. Sheldon's depiction of that character was a full-blooded Spaniard. He played 36 minor roles from 1915 until his death. His last film is '' The Blue Streak'' from 1926. ''The Mark of Zorro'' is a 1920 American silent Western romance film starring Douglas Fairbanks and Noah Beery Sr. This genre-defining swashbuckler adventure was the first movie version of ''The Mark of Zorro''. Based on the 1919 story ''The Curse of Capistrano'' by Johnston McCulley, which introduced the masked hero, Zorro, the screenplay was adapted by Fairbanks (as "Elton Thomas") and Eugene Miller. The film was produced by Fairbanks for his own production company, Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corporation, and was the first film released through United Artists, the company formed by Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and D. Zorro (Spanish language, Spanish for 'fox') is a fictional character created in 1919 by American pulp magazine, pulp writer Johnston McCulley, appearing in works set in the Pueblo of Los Angeles in Alta California. He is typically portrayed as a dashing masked vigilante who defends the commoners and indigenous peoples of California against corrupt and tyrannical officials and other villains. His signature all-black costume includes a cape, a hat known as a , and a mask covering the upper half of his face. In the stories, Zorro has a high Bounty (reward), bounty on his head, but is too skilled and cunning for the bumbling authorities to catch, and he also delights in publicly humiliating them. ''Don Q, Son of Zorro'' is a 1925 American silent swashbuckler romance film and a sequel to the 1920 silent film '' The Mark of Zorro''. It was loosely based upon the 1909 novel ''Don Q.'s Love Story'', written by the mother-and-son duo Kate and Hesketh Hesketh-Prichard. The story was reworked in 1925 (after Hesketh Hesketh-Prichard's death) into a vehicle for the Johnston McCulley character Zorro. ''The Pride of Palomar'' is a 1922 American silent drama film directed by Frank Borzage and written by Grant Carpenter, Peter B. Kyne, and John Lynch. The film stars Forrest Stanley, Marjorie Daw, Tote Du Crow, James O. Barrows, Joseph J. Dowling, and Alfred Allen. The film was released on November 26, 1922, by Paramount Pictures. A print of this film is preserved in the Library of Congress collection. Set at the "Rancho El Palomar", it was filmed largely at Rancho Guajome and Mission San Luis Rey in Vista and Oceanside, CA, respectively. As such, it gives some valuable glimpses of these two historical sites as they were about a century ago (though the back of the ranch building was stuccoed for the movie, which one can still see at Guajome). It also shows a few scenes featuring Pullman porters and dining cars of the 1920s. The movie was unusual in showing some kind of themed background to the intertitles.
