Torsken is a List of former municipalities of Norway, former municipality that was located on the western coast of the large Senja (island), island of Senja in the old Troms Counties of Norway, county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1902 until its dissolution in 2020 when it was merged into the new Senja Municipality. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Gryllefjord. Other larger villages in Torsken municipality included the villages of Torsken (village), Torsken, Medby, and Flakstadvåg. The historic Torsken Church in the village of Torsken dates back to the 18th century. Ånderdalen National Park was partially located inside the old borders of Torsken and neighboring Tranøy municipalities. At the time of its dissolution as a municipality on 1 January 2020, the municipality was the 310th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Torsken Church
Torsken Church ( no, Torsken kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Senja Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in the village of Torsken on the west coast of the island of Senja. It is the main church for the Torsken parish which is part of the Senja prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-HÃ¥logaland. The red, wooden church was built in a cruciform style in 1784 by an unknown architect. The church seats about 100 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1589, but the church was likely founded around the year 1400. The first church was likely located several meters to the north of the present church site. It is not known how many buildings existed on the site, but there have been at least two buildings here. Senja is a municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It was established on 1 January 2020 when the municipalities of Berg, Lenvik, Torsken, and Tranøy were merged into one municipality. It is located in the traditional district of Hålogaland. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Finnsnes. The municipality includes all of the island of Senja, the smaller surrounding islands, and part of the mainland between the Gisundet strait and the Malangen fjord. Gryllefjord is a fishing village in Senja Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located on the island of Senja, along the Gryllefjorden in the northern part of the municipality. The village has a population (2017) of 383 which gives the village a population density of . List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. Troms (; se, Romsa; fkv, Tromssa; fi, Tromssa) is a former county in northern Norway. On 1 January 2020 it was merged with the neighboring Finnmark county to create the new Troms og Finnmark county.
