Torrey Pines Stakes
The Torrey Pines Stakes' is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old fillies run over a distance of one mile on the dirt held annually in August at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. The event currently carries a purse of $125,000. History The event was inaugurated on 10 September 1976 and held in split divisions and was run over a distance of miles on a rainy day. The event is named after Torrey Pines, a community of in the northern coastal area of San Diego, California and south from Del Mar. The event was run as a restricted overnight stakes from 1976 to 2004. The last restriction in 2004 was for non-winners of a sweepstakes event where the winner had won $50,000 or more at one mile or over. The distance of the event was decreased to one mile in 1997. Del Mar Racetrack
The Del Mar Fairgrounds is a event venue in Del Mar, California. The annual San Diego County Fair is held here, which was called the Del Mar Fair from 1984 to 2001. In 1936, the Del Mar Racetrack was built by the Thoroughbred Club with founding member Bing Crosby providing leadership. The Fairgrounds is owned by the State of California and is managed by the 22nd District Agricultural Association, a state agency that hosts more than 300 annual events. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Joseph Talamo
Joseph "Joe" Talamo (born January 12, 1990 in Marrero, Louisiana) is a Champion jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing. Born and raised in Marrero on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, within the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan area, Joe Talamo was influenced by a father who worked in horse racing as an assistant trainer. At age eleven, he began riding horses and worked as a stable boy. Like many successful Cajun jockeys before him, Talamo first raced at a bush track. Fighting Mad (foaled February 18, 2016) is an American Thoroughbred mare and the winner of the 2020 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes. Career Fighting Mad's first race was on August 25, 2018, where she won a Maiden Special Weight race at Del Mar. This was her only race of the season. She began her 2019 season with an April 30, 2019 Allowance race win at Churchill Downs. On May 17, 2019, she competed in her first graded stakes race - the 2019 Miss Preakness Stakes, but finished in a disappointing 7th place. She then did another Allowance Optional Claiming race on July 19, 2019, where she came in 2nd. On August 17, 2019, at Del Mar, she won the Grade-3 Torrey Pines Stakes.
