Torrensville
Torrensville is a western suburb west of the centre of Adelaide, South Australia. It was named after Irish-born economist and chairman of the South Australian Colonisation Commission, Robert Torrens. Torrensville is in the City of West Torrens local government area, the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of West Torrens and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Hindmarsh. The area has a high proportion of Greek-Australians. Revitalisation of the Adelaide's inner suburbs in the 2000s has made Henley Beach Road a vibrant shopping area with many cafes and restaurants. Thebarton, South Australia
Thebarton ( ), formerly Theberton, on Kaurna land, is an inner-western suburb of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of West Torrens. The suburb is bounded by the River Torrens to the north, Port Road and Bonython Park to the east, Kintore Street to the south, and South Road to the west. Many buildings and landmarks that bear the name of Thebarton were in the history municipality, the Town of Thebarton, which included most of the adjoining suburb of Torrensville. These include the Thebarton Oval, the Thebarton croquet and bowls club, Thebarton Theatre, and Thebarton Senior College. Welland, South Australia
Welland is an inner suburb of Adelaide in the City of Charles Sturt local government area. It is around 5 km west northwest of the city centre. It was named for Welland, Worcestershire in 1907. History Welland Post Office opened on 3 October 1921. For much of the twentieth century, Welland and surrounding suburbs were known for the brickmaking industry located near the Torrens River, memorialised today by the large remnant kiln chimney at the Brickworks Marketplace (formerly Brickworks markets) in the extreme north east of Torrensville. In 1923 severe flooding of the Welland brick fields by the Torrens River forced some of the industry to move further west and downstream into Beverley and Allenby Gardens. Mile End, South Australia
Mile End is an inner western suburb of Adelaide, located in the City of West Torrens, around 2 kilometres from the Adelaide city centre. It has a census area population of 4,413 people (2011). Much of the suburb is residential, but there are small commercial areas along Henley Beach Road and South Road. History Mile End was originally established in 1860 as ''The Town of Mile End'' by the South Australian Company. It was so named because the township was approximately one mile from the centre of Adelaide. It was also named after Mile End in east London, England, whose name has a similar meaning. Underdale, South Australia
Underdale is a western suburb of South Australia's capital city Adelaide on Kaurna land. It sits between Henley Beach Road and the River Torrens. It is largely residential with a very small industrial section on the eastern side of Holbrook's Road near the river. Underdale High School sits within the suburb; its alumni include cricket player David Hookes and Australian soccer player Tony Vidmar. Dan Clifford (theatre Entrepreneur)
Dan Clifford (1887 – 9 December 1942) was a well-known cinema entrepreneur and philanthropist in South Australia. He was also a keen promoter of the cinema industry, and owned 20 cinemas across the state at the time of his death, including several in Art Deco style, such as the Piccadilly Theatre and the Goodwood Star (now the Capri). He founded the Star chain of picture theatres in 1917, which became Star Pictures Ltd in 1922 and then D. Clifford Theatres in 1923. The business was also referred to as the Clifford Theatre(s) Circuit, the Dan Clifford Cinema Circuit or Star (Theatre) Circuit in newspapers. Robert Torrens (economist)
Robert Torrens (1780 – 27 May 1864) was a Royal Marines officer, political economist, part-owner of the influential ''Globe'' newspaper, and a prolific writer. He also chaired the board of the London-based South Australian Colonisation Commission created by the ''South Australia Act 1834'' to oversee the new colony of South Australia, before the colony went bankrupt and he was sacked in 1841. He was chiefly known for championing the cause for emigration to the new colony, and his name lives on in Adelaide's main river, the Torrens, the suburb of Torrensville and a few other places. He is sometimes referred to as Colonel Robert Torrens, but his final army rank is disputed in various sources. The City of West Torrens is a local government area in the western suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. Since the 1970s the area was mainly home to many open spaces and parks, however after the mid-1990s (1993-1995) the LGA became more residential. Brooklyn Park is a western suburb of the South Australian capital of Adelaide. It is located on Kaurna land, immediately north-east of Adelaide Airport and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) base on Sir Donald Bradman Drive (the Boulevard of Honour ) .
