Toroweap Overlook
Toroweap Overlook (also known as Tuweep Overlook or Toroweap Point) is a viewpoint within the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, United States. It is located in a remote area on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, west of the North Rim Headquarters (but by road). The overlook is the only viewpoint in the National Park from where the Colorado River can be seen vertically below. The overlook stands above the river. Terminology Toroweap and Tuweep are used more or less interchangeably. The term Tuweep, a Paiute word for "the earth", was used for an early Mormon settlement in the valley, and is now used by the National Park Service to refer to the area. Vulcan's Throne
Vulcan's Throne is a cinder cone volcano and a prominent landmark on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, United States. The volcano is adjacent the Colorado River, (thousands of feet above the river) as it is the source material for Lava Falls and Lava Falls Rapids (Vulcan Rapids) one of the largest rapids of the Colorado. Vulcan's Throne, about a mile (1.7 km) west of Toroweap overlook, is part of the Uinkaret volcanic field. The journals of traveler George Corning Fraser record a trip to the summit of Vulcan's Throne in 1914. At the time, the surrounding area was used for sheep grazing, and a small reservoir had been constructed at the base of the volcano. The geology of the Grand Canyon area includes one of the most complete and studied sequences of rock (geology), rock on Earth. Tuckup Trail
The Tuckup Trail is a hiking trail on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, in Grand Canyon National Park, located in the U.S. state of Arizona. It extends from Toroweap Point-(Toroweap Overlook), to 150 Mile Canyon on the Esplanade Sandstone member of the Supai formation. It originated as a cattle trail and many cowboy camps can be found along its extent. It has few reliable water sources, Schmutz Spring at the head of Tuckup Canyon being one of them. Toroweap Valley The Toroweap Overlook occurs at a transition point of the west Grand Canyon. The Toroweap Fault has caused a down-faulted section to the west. Lava Falls, and Vulcan's Throne are two landforms produced by the Uinkaret volcanic field viewed to the west and northwest. Fredonia, Arizona
Fredonia is a town in Coconino County, Arizona, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,314. Fredonia is the gateway to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. History Fredonia was laid out in 1886. Its name is said to mean the "land of free women." The town's cemetery has graves dating from the 1880s. The town suffered economically from the re-routing of U.S. 89 in 1960. While the highway previously went through Fredonia, it was re-routed north of the Glen Canyon dam, and the town lost several businesses due to a drop in traffic. Senator Barry Goldwater gave the commencement at Fredonia High School in 1964. Kaibab Forest Products was the major industry in town until 1995, when it closed and laid off 200 workers.
