Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra
The Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO) is a high-level orchestral training programme for musicians aged 22 and under, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. TSYO alumni are found in most major performing organizations in Canada, and many have embarked on solo and chamber music careers worldwide. The TSYO is led by the TSO's RBC Resident Conductor, Simon Rivard, and coached by TSO musicians Shane Kim (Violin), Peter Seminovs (Violin), Theresa Rudolph (Viola), Joseph Johnson (Cello), Paul Rogers (Double Bass), Miles Jaques (Woodwinds), Nicholas Hartman (Brass), and Joseph Kelly (Percussion). Previous conductors include Alain Trudel, who conducted the orchestra from 2004 to 2012, and Shalom Bard. Founded in 1974 by Victor Feldbrill, the TSYO has had a close partnership with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for over 30 years. Jukka-Pekka Saraste
Jukka-Pekka Saraste (born 22 April 1956) is a Finnish conductor and violinist. Biography Saraste was born in Heinola He was trained as a violinist. He later studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy with Jorma Panula in the same class as Esa-Pekka Salonen and Osmo Vänskä. Before becoming a conductor, Saraste was co-principal second violinist and later an associate to Leif Segerstam, with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO). In 1983, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Saraste co-founded the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, which specialises in performances of contemporary music. In 2000, Saraste also founded the Ekenäs Summer Concerts-Festival with the Finnish Chamber Orchestra, and he is currently the artistic advisor to both Festival and Orchestra. Earl Lee
Earl Lee (born 9 December 1983) is a Korean-Canadian conductor and cellist. Early education Lee was born in Yeosu, South Korea,. He started piano at the age of 5, and started cello at aged 9. His entire family immigrated to Vancouver, Canada in 1995, then settled into Toronto in 1999. Lee began his career as a cellist in the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. He was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music at the age of 16; he studied cello with Orlando Cole and Peter Wiley. Earl Lee was diagnosed with focal dystonia when he was 24. He was proactive in finding a solution for his condition; he flew to South Korea to seek a top acupuncture specialist, but did not garner results. He sought out Spanish experts in the condition, but the recovery was very slow and unpredictable. Initially devastated, he turned to conducting as a music outlet. Sir Andrew Frank Davis (born 2 February 1944) is an English conductor. He is conductor laureate of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Early life and education Born in Ashridge, to Robert J. Davis and his wife Florence Joyce (née Badminton), Davis grew up in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, and in Watford. Davis attended Watford Boys' Grammar School, where he studied classics in his sixth form years. His adolescent musical work included playing the organ at the Palace Theatre, Watford. Davis studied at the Royal Academy of Music and King's College, Cambridge, where he was an organ scholar, graduating in 1967. He later studied conducting in Rome with Franco Ferrara. Christian Lindberg (born 15 February 1958) is a Swedish trombonist, conductor and composer, Biography Early life and career Lindberg was born in Danderyd. As a youth, he learned to play the trumpet, and subsequently began to learn the trombone at age 16. He originally borrowed a trombone to join his friends' Dixieland jazz group, inspired by records of Jack Teagarden. He attended the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, where his teachers included Sven-Erik Eriksson. By age 18, he had obtained a professional position in the Royal Swedish Opera Orchestra.
