Torah Day School Of Houston
Torah Day School of Houston is a Jewish Day School in Houston established in 1977 by the Texas Regional Headquarters of the Chabad Lubavitch. It offers a Jewish education to grades K-8 in addition to its Early Childhood Center for children ages eighteen months through four years old. About Rabbi Shimon Lazaroff opened the school along with parents in an attempt to provide quality Jewish and general studies education for the Houston Jewish Community. For over thirty years its students have received a traditional Jewish education, comprehensive in scope, and a simultaneous general studies program. The dual curriculum eliminates the need for after school religious classes as it provides daily Judaic learning experiences for pre-school through eighth grade students. Shimon Lazaroff
Rabbi Shimon Lazaroff is the current Texas Regional Director for Texas Friends of Chabad Lubavitch, Inc. (a.k.a. Head Shliach for Chabad Lubavitch of Texas) and member of the board and executive committee of Agudas Chasidei Chabad. With the direction of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, he established Chabad Lubavitch in Texas upon his arrival with his family in 1972. Early life Lazaroff was born in the former Soviet Union where his grandfather, Shimon Lazaroff, was the Hasidic Chief Rabbi of Leningrad. Rabbi Lazaroff received his early education in Paris, France. He later studied at the Chabad Talmudical Academy in Lod, Israel. While in Israel, he began to be active in Youth Leadership work. The Texas Alliance of Accredited Private Schools (TAAPS) seeks to accredit private schools that meet the standards of the association and that maintain the quality of education as expected by TAAPS. The alliance was established to accredit nonpublic schools under the umbrella of the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission (TEPSAC). In 1985, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) discontinued nonpublic school accreditation because it interfered with the agency's first obligation to the public schools. The Jewish community of Houston, Texas has grown and thrived since the 1800s. As of 2008 Jews lived in many Houston neighborhoods and Meyerland is the center of the Jewish community in the area. History Until 1880 Houston had a smaller Jewish population than Galveston Island, then the cultural center of the state. In 1844, a plot of land in Houston had been purchased for a Jewish cemetery.
