Torpa, Norway
Torpa (or historically ''Torpen'') is a former municipality in the old Oppland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1914 until its dissolution in 1962. The area is now part of Nordre Land Municipality. The administrative centre was the village at Åmot where the Åmot Church is located. Torpa currently constitutes the northern part of the Nordre Land, bordering the municipalities of Etnedal and Nord-Aurdal in the west, Gausdal, Lillehammer, and Gjøvik in the east. Name The municipality (and parish) were named ''Torpen'' ( non, Þorp) since this is the old name for this area. The meaning of the word ''þorp'' is probably "pasture" or "grazing land". Prior to 1918, the name was written "Torpen" and in 1918 it was changed to "Torpa". Biathlon World Championships
The first Biathlon World Championships (BWCH) was held in 1958, with individual and team contests for men. The number of events has grown significantly over the years. Beginning in 1984, women biathletes had their own World Championships, and finally, from 1989, both genders have been participating in joint Biathlon World Championships. In 1978 the development was enhanced by the change from the large army rifle calibre to a small bore rifle, while the range to the target was reduced from 150 to 50 meters. Venues The Biathlon World Championships of the season takes place during February or March. Some years it has been necessary to schedule parts of the Championships at other than the main venue because of weather and/or snow conditions. The 1976 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XII Olympic Winter Games (german: XII. Olympische Winterspiele, french: XIIes Jeux olympiques d'hiver) and commonly known as Innsbruck 1976 ( bar, Innschbruck 1976, label=Austro-Bavarian), was a winter multi-sport event celebrated in Innsbruck, Austria, from February 4 to 15, 1976. The 1972 Winter Olympics, officially the and commonly known as Sapporo 1972 ( ja, 札幌1972), was a winter multi-sport event held from February 3 to 13, 1972, in Sapporo, Japan. It was the first Winter Olympic Games to take place outside Europe and North America. Host city selection Sapporo first won the rights to host the 1940 Winter Olympics, but Japan resigned as the Games' host after its Second Sino-Japanese War, 1937 invasion of China.
