TF5800PVR
The TF5800PVR and similar TF5800PVRt is the UK Freeview version of Topfield's TF5000PVRt, which is a personal video recorder (PVR) with twin tuners; it is possible to record two programs and view a third so long as all programs do not use more than two multiplexes. Firmware upgrades were distributed over-the-air using the normal FreeView distribution method, and are also available for Internet download. Topfield devices are often referred to as “Toppys”. The device has the features expected from a dual-tuner PVR, but also allows extensive software customisation by the use of TAPs (described below). Topfield TAP
A Topfield Application Program (TAP) is a software application which extends the standard functionality of the Topfield products designed for digital TV. Examples of TAPs are electronic programme guides, digital photo viewers and MP3 players. Anyone with the necessary computer programming skills may create a TAP to meet their needs. This is possible because Topfield have specified an API#Release policies, open (or public) API which allows TAPs to be created using the C (programming language), C or C++ programming languages. They can be installed into most Topfield personal video recorder, PVR models. Freeview (UK)
Freeview is the United Kingdom's sole digital terrestrial television platform. It is operated by Digital UK Ltd and DTV Services Ltd, a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky. It was launched on 30 October 2002, taking over the licence from ITV Digital which collapsed that year. The service provides consumer access via an aerial to the seven DTT multiplexes covering the United Kingdom.
