Toorak Art Gallery was an art gallery 277 Toorak Road, South Yarra, Melbourne, Victoria, which specialised in contemporary figurative and abstract Australian art. It was in operation from 1964 to 1975. South Yarra, Victoria
South Yarra is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 4 km south-east of Melbourne's Melbourne central business district, Central Business District, located within the Cities of City of Melbourne, Melbourne and City of Stonnington, Stonnington Local government areas of Victoria, local government areas. South Yarra recorded a population of 25,028 at the 2021 Australian census, 2021 census. Roland Wakelin
Roland Wakelin (17 April 1887 – 28 May 1971) was a New Zealand-born Australian painter and teacher. Early life Roland Shakespeare Wakelin was born on 17 April 1887 in Greytown, New Zealand. He studied at Wellington Technical School from 1902 to 1903. Shortly after, while working in the Land and Income Tax Department, he took night classes in painting under Henri Bastings. In 1908 and 1909, he visited his brother in Sydney then in 1912 joined him, then enrolled in the Royal Art Society School to study drawing and painting under Dattilo Rubbo alongside fellow students Smith, Norah Simpson and Roy de Maistre. Career In 1913, he started working at the New South Wales Land Tax Office. In 1914, he started working as a ticket writer for Mark Foy's and David Jones department stores, then from 1916 worked for the commercial art firm of Smith and Julius. Desiderius Orban
Desiderius Orban, (; 26 November 18844 October 1986) was a renowned Hungarian painter, printmaker and teacher, who, after emigrating to Australia in 1939 when in his mid-50s, also made an illustrious career in that country. One of The Eight in Budapest, early 20th-century painters who were influential in introducing cubism, expressionism and Fauvism to Hungary, Orbán had been influenced by the paintings of Henri Matisse, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne, seen when he lived in Paris. After building a substantial career, in 1939 after the rise of Nazi Germany and the invasion of Poland, he left Hungary and emigrated to Sydney. He painted and taught for nearly another fifty years, influencing generations of students. Shay Docking
Shay Docking (1928–1998) was an Australian artist who specialised in landscape drawing. Early life Docking was born in Warrnambool Victoria in 1928, and was the youngest of seven children. Her father was a clergyman and her mother a musician. In 1939 she moved to Boort. Work Docking was a landscape painter. Most of her work was inspired by the western district of Victoria where she grew up. While in New Zealand she was inspired by the volcanoes. She produced a series of paintings inspired by the landscape of Ku-ring-gai Chase as well as a series inspired by Sydney Harbour. Docking featured in an ''Exhibition of Paintings by Leading Victorian and Interstate Artists'' at the Australian Galleries, Melbourne in 1957. In 1960 she exhibited her work in group exhibitions in Sydney and Melbourne and in 1961 she held her first solo shows in the Argus Gallery and the Blaxland Gallery.
