Toomevara GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the parish of Toomevara in County Tipperary, Ireland. The club is almost exclusively concerned with hurling. Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. The association also promotes Irish music and dance, as well as the Irish language. As of 2014, the organisation had over 500,000 members worldwide, and declared total revenues of €65.6 million in 2017. Willie Ryan (Tipperary Hurler)
Willie Ryan (born 29 December 1984 in Toomevara, County Tipperary) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Toomevara and has been a member of the Tipperary senior inter-county team since 2006. Playing career Club Ryan plays his club hurling with his local club in Toomevara and has enjoyed much success. In 2003 Ryan's side reached the final of the county senior championship with Thurles Sarsfields providing the opposition. A high-scoring game developed, however, at the full-time whistle Toomevara were the champions by 3-19 to 3-14 and Ryan collected a county winners' medal. This was a fourth consecutive county final defeat for Thurles Sarsfields. Toomevara later represented Tipperary in the provincial club championship, however, they were defeated at the semi-final stage. 2004 saw Ryan line out in a second consecutive county final. Phil Shanahan
Phil Shanahan (4 January 1928 – 5 February 2012) was an Irish hurling, hurler who played as a midfielder for the Tipperary GAA, Tipperary and Dublin GAA, Dublin senior teams. Shanahan made his first appearance for the Tipperary team during the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1946, 1946 championship and became a regular member of the team over the next decade. During that time he won three All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland winners' medals, three Munster Senior Hurling Championship, Munster winners' medals and three National Hurling League, National League winners' medals. In 1955 and 1956 Shanahan played with the Dublin GAA, Dublin senior team, however, he returned to Tipperary before his retirement from the inter-county scene after the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1957, 1957 championship. John O'Brien (hurler)
John O'Brien (born 3 January 1982) is an Irish hurler who played as a centre-forward for the Tipperary senior team. Born in Toomevara, County Tipperary, O'Brien first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Tipperary minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 2001 league. O'Brien went on to enjoy a lengthy career, and won two All-Ireland medals, five Munster medals and one National Hurling League medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions. At club level O'Brien is a two-time Munster medallist with Toomevara. In addition to this he has also won seven championship medals and three county final Man of the Match awards. His brother, Paddy O'Brien, is also an All-Ireland medallist with Tipperary. Martin Kennedy (hurler)
Martin Kennedy (20 November 1898 – 17 July 1983) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Toomevara and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team from 1922 until 1936. Kennedy is regarded as one of Tipperary's greatest-ever players. Playing career Club Kennedy first played club hurling as a goalkeeper with the Borrisoleigh club. He had been born in that portion of the parish and contested two county intermediate finals before transferring his allegiance to the Toomevara club in 1919. It was only when the regular full-forward on that team got injured that Kennedy was used in this position and he went on to enjoy much success. He won his first senior county title in 1919 and added further county medals in 1923, 1930 and 1931. Kennedy continued to play until well into his forties and joined the Kildangan club after marrying and settling there. Garrett Howard
Garrett Howard (10 December 1899 – 20 January 1995) was an Irish hurler who played as a left wing-back for the Limerick, Dublin and Tipperary senior teams. Born in Patrickswell, County Limerick, Howard first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-one when he first linked up with the Limerick senior team, before later lining out with the Dublin and Tipperary sides before returning to the Limerick colours. He made his senior debut in the 1921 championship. Howard went on to enjoy a fifteen-year inter-county career, and won five All-Ireland medals, five Munster medals, three Leinster medals and four National Hurling League medals. John Haugh (hurler)
John Haugh (1930–1998) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with local club Toomevara and also with Holycross-Ballycahill. He was a member of the Tipperary senior inter-county hurling team from 1951 to 1961. Early life John Haugh was born into a sporting family in Ballycrinode in the parish of Toomevara in 1930. His uncle Dennis Haugh had previously been crowned British Light-Heavyweight boxing champion in 1913. Toomevara is a parish steeped in hurling tradition, so it was only to be expected that hurling would interest John from an early age. He learned the skills and acquired the arts of the game from his masters and his peers and he became one of the great players of his parish and county. Matt Hassett
Matthew "Matt" Hassett (born 1932) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a right corner-back for the Tipperary senior team. Born in Toomevara, County Tipperary, Hassett first played competitive hurling during his schooling at the Patrician College, Ballyfin. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-seven when he first linked up with the Tipperary senior team. He made his senior debut in the 1960 championship. Hassett went on to play a brief role for Tipperary during a golden age for the team, and won one All-Ireland medal, two Munster medals and one National Hurling League medal. An All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion, Hassett also captained the team to All-Ireland victory in 1961. At club level Hassett was a one-time championship medallist with Toomevara. Tommy Dunne
Tomás Dunne (born 21 May 1974) is an Irish hurling coach and former player who is from Toomevara, County Tipperary in Ireland. He is the current coach of the Tipperary senior hurling team. Dunne enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Toomevara GAA club and at inter-county level with Tipperary. He was a midfielder on the latter team from 1993 until 2005 and collected one All-Ireland title as captain, two Munster titles, three National Hurling League titles and three All-Star awards. Immediately after retiring from inter-county and club activity, Dunne became involved in team management. He was a selector on the Tipperary minor team that captured the All-Ireland title in that grade in 2007. Benny Dunne
Benny Dunne (born 22 September 1980) is an Irish hurler who played as a midfielder for the Tipperary senior team. He joined the team in 2002 and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement in 2011. Younger brother of current selector Tommy, Dunne was a stalwart on the Tipperary team for a decade. David Young (hurler)
David Young (born 13 July 1985) is an Irish hurler who currently plays since 2015 as a right wing-back for the Kildare senior team. He previously played for the Tipperary senior team. Young made his first appearance for the team during the 2010 National League and has remained a peripheral player over the last few seasons. During that time he has won one All-Ireland winners' medal on the field of play. He has ended up as an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions.
