Kenneth Toombs
Kenneth Eldridge Toombs (25 August 1928 – 4 March 2008), AKA Kenneth Toombs and Kenneth E. Toombs, was 20th-century American best known as director of the libraries of the University of South Carolina (1967-1988). Career Toombs helped establish the University of South Carolina's Thomas Cooper Library and Law Library and co-founded the Southeastern Library Network. He helped establish the South Caroliniana Library by approving Thomas L. Johnson as its first field archivist and who interviewed Grace Lumpkin for the archive. He also helped in establishing rights for southern chapters of the American Library Association. Robert Toombs
Robert Augustus Toombs (July 2, 1810 – December 15, 1885) was an American politician from Georgia, who was an important figure in the formation of the Confederacy. From a privileged background as a wealthy planter and slaveholder, Toombs embarked on a political career marked by effective oratory, although he also acquired a reputation for hard living, disheveled appearance, and irascibility. He was identified with Alexander H. Stephens's libertarian wing of secessionist opinion, and in contradistinction to the nationalist Jefferson Davis, Toombs believed a Civil War to be neither inevitable or winnable by the South. Appointed as Secretary of State of the Confederacy (which lacked political parties) Toombs was against the decision to attack Fort Sumter, and resigned from Davis's cabinet. Roddy Piper
Roderick George Toombs (April 17, 1954 – July 31, 2015), better known as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, was a Canadian professional wrestler, amateur wrestler, and actor. In professional wrestling, Piper was best known to international audiences for his work with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW) between 1984 and 2000. Although he was Canadian, because of his Scottish heritage he was billed as coming from Glasgow and was known for his signature kilt and bagpipe entrance music. Piper earned the nicknames "Rowdy" and "Hot Rod" by displaying his trademark "Scottish" short temper, spontaneity, and quick wit. Rudy Toombs
Rudolph Toombs (1914 – November 28, 1962) was an American performer and songwriter. He wrote "Teardrops from My Eyes", Ruth Brown's first number one R&B song, and other hit songs for her, including " 5-10-15 Hours". He also wrote "One Mint Julep" for The Clovers. History Toombs was born in Monroe, Louisiana. He began as a vaudeville-style song-and-dance man and later became a productive lyricist and composer of doo-wop songs and rhythm-and-blues standards in the 1950s and 1960s. Some of his work was done at Atlantic Records, writing and arranging songs for Ahmet Ertegun. Toombs was murdered by robbers in the hallway of his apartment house in Harlem in 1962. Ruth Brown credited Toombs as a major reason for her success. She describes him as joyful, exuberant man, so full of life that he passed that ebullience on to her. Sam Toombs
Captain Samuel Toombs JP (26 March 1871 – 17 November 1949) was a seaman and an Australian politician, elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing the seat of Hurstville. He was born in Plymouth, England as where he spent his childhood and school years. Samuel followed his father, Samuel Toombs Senior, with service in the Royal Navy in England. Samuel Jr. migrated to Australia, arriving in New South Wales in 1891. He continued his military career with the Royal Australian Navy, where he attained the rank of Captain. Toombs married Mary Jane Gorman in 1895 and together they had 2 daughters and 3 sons. Toombs remarried Agnes Claire Donohue in 1944. Toombs died at the age of 78 at Lansvale, a suburb of Sydney.
