David Anthony Rice (June 8, 1951 – December 25, 2020) was an American Bluegrass music, bluegrass guitarist. He was an influential acoustic guitar player in bluegrass, progressive bluegrass, newgrass and acoustic jazz. He was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2013. Rice's music spans the range of acoustic from traditional bluegrass to jazz-influenced New Acoustic music to songwriter-oriented folk music, folk. Over the course of his career, he played alongside J. D. Crowe and New South (band), the New South, David Grisman (during the formation of "Dawg Music") and Jerry Garcia, led his own Tony Rice Unit, collaborated with Norman Blake (American musician), Norman Blake, recorded with his brothers Wyatt Rice, Wyatt, Ron, and Larry Rice (musician), Larry, and co-founded the Bluegrass Album Band. Danville is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States, located in the Southside Virginia region and on the fall line of the Dan River. It was a center of tobacco production and was an area of Confederate activity during the American Civil War, due to its strategic location on the Richmond and Danville Railroad. In April 1865 it briefly served as the final capital of the Confederacy before the South surrendered. Danville is the principal city of the Danville, Virginia Micropolitan Statistical Area.
