Tony Kemp (rugby League)
Tony Kemp (born 18 January 1968) is a New Zealand former rugby league test representative and former coach of the New Zealand Warriors. He is a commentator for Māori Television's coverage of the Auckland Rugby League competition and also serves as the Football Manager for the New Zealand Rugby League. Background Kemp was born in Whangarei but raised in Waitara, and attended Waitara High School. He played rugby league for the Randwick Kingfishers in the Wellington Rugby League competition and in 1987 made the Junior Kiwis. Playing career 1980s In 1986/87 he joined the Doncaster for a season before taking up a professional career full-time when he joined the Newcastle Knights in 1988. During the 1988 Great Britain Lions tour Newcastle hosted a match against the visiting British national team with Kemp playing at centre and scoring a try in the Knights' 12 – 28 loss. Taranaki Rugby League is the local sporting body responsible for the administration of Rugby league in the Taranaki region of New Zealand. The TRL are represented by the Taranaki rugby league team. Test Match (rugby League)
A test match in rugby league football is a representative match between teams representing members of the Rugby League International Federation. The definition of a test match differs from that of an international match. An international match can be played "between senior/open age or restricted age-level teams from different countries". Recognition Members of the international governing body can make their own recognition of a match as having test status. It is possible for a match to be considered a test by one side but not the other. Matches may also be given test status retrospectively by their governing bodies. A notable instance of a different in opinions of the status of past matches is a consequence of the Super League war. 1992 Great Britain Lions Tour Of Australasia
The 1992 Great Britain Lions tour of Australasia was a tour by the Great Britain national rugby league team, nicknamed the 'Lions', of Papua New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand which took place between May and July 1992. The tour was the last of such length undertaken by the Great Britain team, and included a test match against Papua New Guinea, a three-test series against Australia for The Ashes, and a two-test series against New Zealand for the Baskerville Shield, all interspersed with matches against local club and representative teams. Taking place following the conclusion of England's 1991–92 Rugby Football League season and during Australia's 1992 Winfield Cup premiership season, the tour led to friction between the Great Britain team's management and the Australian Rugby League over match scheduling and promotion. 1991 Trans-Tasman Test Series
The 1991 Trans-Tasman Test series was an international rugby league test series played in Australia between Australia and New Zealand. The series, which started on 3 July in Melbourne and finished on 31 July in Brisbane, consisted of three test matches, with the third test doubling as a 1989–1992 Rugby League World Cup tournament match. New Zealand did not play in any other matches while on tour. The test series was broadcast throughout Australia by the Seven Network with commentary provided by Pat Welsh, Roy Masters and Jon Harker. Paul Vautin provided sideline commentary during the first test in Melbourne but was replaced from the second test by Harker to allow Wally Lewis to join the team following his omission from the Australian test team. Touring squad An initial 28-man squad was selected for the tour in April 1990. Warrington's Des Drummond and Widnes' David Hulme and Paul Hulme were all unavailable for selection for "private reasons". 1988 Great Britain Lions Tour
The 1988 Great Britain Lions tour was the Great Britain national rugby league team's 18th tour of Australasia and took place from May to July 1988. It started with a Test match against Papua New Guinea before the best-of-three series against Australia for the Ashes title, and finally a Test against New Zealand. Some of these matches counted toward the ongoing 1985–1988 World Cup tournament. An additional 13 matches were played against local club and representative sides from each host nation. Junior Kiwis
The Junior Kiwis side represents New Zealand in the sport of rugby league. They are commonly known as the Junior Kiwis, after the native bird of that name. Since 2010, they are an under-20s side, with players selected from the NRL, Intrust Super Cup, Intrust Super Premiership, Jersey Flegg Cup and Hastings Deering Colts.
