Tonkpi Region
Tonkpi Region is one of the 31 regions of Ivory Coast. Since its establishment in 2011, it has been one of three regions in Montagnes District. The seat of the region is Man and the region's population in the 2021 census was 1,387,909, predominantly of Dan (Yacouba) ethnicity. Tonkpi is currently divided into five departments: Biankouma, Danané, Man, Sipilou Sipilou (also known as Siquita) is a town in the far west of Ivory Coast. Regions Of Ivory Coast
The regions of Ivory Coast (french: régions de la Côte d'Ivoire) are the second-level subdivisions of Ivory Coast. There are 31 regions, and each region is subdivided into two or more departments, the third-level division in Ivory Coast. Two to four regions were combined to make up a district, the first-level subdivision, that was abolished in 2014. The two autonomous districts of Ivory Coast are not divided into regions. History The first 10 regions were established in 1990.Sato (2003). At the time, they supplanted the departments as the first-level administrative subdivisions of the country, with the departments being converted into second-level subdivisions. Montagnes District
Montagnes District (french: District des Montagnes) is one of fourteen administrative districts of Ivory Coast. The district is located in the western part of the country, bordering Liberia and Guinea to the west, Woroba District to the north, Sassandra-Marahoué District to the east, and Bas-Sassandra District to the south. The capital of the district is Man. Man, Ivory Coast
Man is a city in western Ivory Coast. It is the seat of both Montagnes District and Tonkpi Region. It is also a commune and the seat of and a sub-prefecture of Man Department. In the 2014 census, the city had a population of 149,041, making it the eighth-largest city in the country. Dan People
The Dan are a Mande ethnic group from northwestern Ivory Coast and neighboring Liberia. There are approximately 700,000 members of the group and their largest settlement is Man, Ivory Coast. Neighboring peoples include the Krahn, Kpelle and Mano. They are officially known as Yacouba (or Yakouba) in Ivory Coast. In Liberia, they are also known as Gio ( Bassa for "slave"), which is considered a derogatory exonym. They speak the Dan language, a Southeast Mande language. The Dan are known for their art, especially their mask rituals (''Ge'' or ''Gle''), as well as their secret society, ''Gor''.
