Tonicella Lineata
''Tonicella lineata'', commonly known as the lined chiton, is a species of chiton from the North Pacific. Size and description ''Tonicella lineata'' is a very colorful chiton, having blue, purple or black straight or zig-zag lines on each of the eight valves. The background color of the valves is often brown or red, but can also be bright blue or yellow to orange. The girdle is hairless and brown to red or pink, often with regular yellow or white patches. This species grows to 5 cm in length. Similar species ''Tonicella lokii'' is extremely similar but has radiating bands on the girdle. ''Tonicella undocaerulea'' is very similar but lacks a dark border to the concentric blue lines on the anterior plate. ''Mopalia spectabilis'' looks superficially similar due to its bright blue wavy lines on the valves, but has a hairy girdle.Baldwin, A. (2007). Illustrated Keys to the chitons (Polyplacophora). Accessed from: It can also be confused with ''Tonicella insignis'' ( Reeve, 184 ...

Chiton
Chitons () are marine molluscs of varying size in the class Polyplacophora (), formerly known as Amphineura. About 940 extant and 430 fossil species are recognized. They are also sometimes known as gumboots or sea cradles or coat-of-mail shells or suck-rocks, or more formally as loricates, polyplacophorans, and occasionally as polyplacophores. Chitons have a shell composed of eight separate shell plates or valves. These plates overlap slightly at the front and back edges, and yet articulate well with one another. Because of this, the shell provides protection at the same time as permitting the chiton to flex upward when needed for locomotion over uneven surfaces, and even allows the animal to curl up into a ball when dislodged from rocks. The shell plates are encircled by a skirt known as a girdle. Habitat Chitons live worldwide, from cold waters through to the tropics. They live on hard surfaces, such as on or under rocks, or in rock crevices. Some species live quite hi ...

Greek Language
Greek ( el, label=Modern Greek, Ελληνικά, Elliniká, ; grc, Ἑλληνική, Hellēnikḗ) is an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages, native to Greece, Cyprus, southern Italy (Calabria and Salento), southern Albania, and other regions of the Balkans, the Black Sea coast, Asia Minor, and the Eastern Mediterranean. It has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, spanning at least 3,400 years of written records. Its writing system is the Greek alphabet, which has been used for approximately 2,800 years; previously, Greek was recorded in writing systems such as Linear B and the Cypriot syllabary. The alphabet arose from the Phoenician script and was in turn the basis of the Latin, Cyrillic, Armenian, Coptic, Gothic, and many other writing systems. The Greek language holds a very important place in the history of the Western world. Beginning with the epics of Homer, ancient Greek literature includes many works of lasting impo ...

Tonicella Insignis
''Tonicella insignis'', the white-lined chiton, or red chiton, also known as the hidden chiton, belongs to the Tonicellidae family in the class Polyplacophora, and the phylum of Mollusca. Its body length of T. insignis is around 5 cm. Habitat It can be found in the coastal region of Alaska to Oregon in North America. Similar to other types of chitons, T. insignis also lives on hard rocks in the Subtidal zone, sub-tidal zone and can be found at depths up to 52 meters under water. Characteristic ''Tonicella insignis'' have camouflaged eight-valve shells with white wavy lines on all valves.Lamb, Andy & Handy, Bernard P. Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest Harbour Publishing 2005 The shell protects themselves from predators by blending their body into the environment. The special white line on T. insignis is one of the most distinguish characteristic which only exist on the second to the seventh valve. ''Tonicella insignis'' mainly eats phytoplankton and algae that floating ar ...

''Tonicella lokii'', commonly known as the flame lined chiton or Loki's chiton, is a chiton in the lined chiton genus ''Tonicella''. Size and description Like most chitons in this genus, ''T. lokii'' has blue, white, purple or black zig-zaged lines on each of the eight valves. The background color of the valves is often brown or red, but can also be bright blue or yellow to orange. The girdle is hairless and brown to red or pink. It has radiating bands and often bears a yellow or white broken concentric line, alternating with radiating bands.Clark, R.N. (1999). The ''Tonicella lineata'' (Wood, 1815) complex (Polyplacophora: Tonicellidae), with descriptions of two new species. ''American Malacological Bulletin'' 15: 33–46. Tonicella Marmorea
''Tonicella marmorea'' is a species of chiton, a polyplacophoran mollusc found in the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean. It was first described by the Danish missionary and naturalist Otto Fabricius. Description ''Tonicella marmorea'' is broadly oval and grows to a length of about . The eight plates of which the shell is composed are smooth and glossy, reddish-brown, marbled or patterned with intricate pale brown or white zigzag lines. The girdle which surrounds the shell is wide, thin and leathery, and also reddish-brown. Round its margin are small, flattened spines in red, purple or green, sometimes with paler bands. There are 17 to 25 pairs of gills, usually in the posterior part of the mantle groove, but sometimes scattered along the groove. On the ventral side is the yellowish muscular foot, with the mouth at the anterior end and the anus at the posterior end. In the northwestern Atlantic the colouring may vary. Distribution and habitat This species occurs in th ...
