Tonia (singer)
Tonia (born Arlette Antoine Dominicus, 25 July 1947, Anderlecht) is a Belgian singer, best known for her participation in the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest. Early career Tonia released her first single, "Mon p'tit copain de vacances", in 1963, and went on to release numerous further singles. She would often record both Dutch and French cover versions of popular German songs. Eurovision Song Contest In the 1966 Belgian Eurovision selection, Tonia performed four songs and the winner, " Un peu de poivre, un peu de sel" ("A Little Pepper, A Little Salt"), was chosen by postcard voting as the representative for the 11th Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 5 March in Luxembourg City. "Un peu de poivre, un peu de sel" finished in fourth place of 18 entries, Belgium's highest placing in Eurovision to that date, which would not be bettered until 1978. Anderlecht
Anderlecht (, ) is one of the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium. Located in the south-western part of the region, it is bordered by the City of Brussels, Forest, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, and Saint-Gilles, as well as the Flemish municipalities of Dilbeek and Sint-Pieters-Leeuw. Lize Marke (born Liliane Couck, Denderleeuw, 1 December 1936) is a Belgian singer, best known for her participation in the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest. Eurovision Song Contest Marke started singing professionally in 1962, and first participated in the Belgian Eurovision selection in 1963, when she performed two songs, "Luister naar de wind" and "Saksisch porselein", which made the final, finishing in second and fourth respectively. Marke sung all six songs in the 1965 Eurovision selection, and "Als het weer lente is" ("When It's Spring Again") was chosen by jury vote as the Belgian representative in the tenth Eurovision Song Contest 1965, Eurovision Song Contest, held on 20 March in Naples, Italy. Belgium was represented by Louis Neefs, with the song "Ik heb zorgen", at the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 8 April in Vienna. "Ik heb zorgen" was chosen at the Belgian national final on 25 February. Neefs would represent Belgium again in 1969. Before Eurovision National final Qualification for the national final was via a series of nine heats which took the form of elimination rounds, with the eight songs left standing to go forward to the final. The final took place on 25 February 1967 at the Amerikaans Theater in Brussels, hosted by Jan Theys. In the event only seven songs took part, as Neefs had qualified two songs but decided to jettison "Zij was zo mooi" in order not to run the risk of splitting his vote (although given the ultimate margin of victory of "Ik heb zorgen", this would have been academic). Louis Neefs
Louis Neefs (born Ludwig Adèle Maria Jozef Neefs, 8 August 1937, Gierle – 25 December 1980, Lier) was a Belgian singer and presenter, known for his participation in the Eurovision Song Contests of 1967 and 1969. Early career Neefs was training for a career in technical drawing at college in Mechelen when he joined the college choir and started learning to play guitar. At first his musical activities were purely recreational, but by the late 1950s he had become a member of a group called Sun Spot. Via performances and talent competitions, Neefs' distinctive singing voice came to the notice of famous musical talent scout Jacques Kluger, who had also discovered, among others, Bobbejaan Schoepen. Kluger and Schoepen brought Neefs to the attention of record companies, and he was signed to a contract in 1958, releasing his first album in 1960. Belgium was represented by Lize Marke, with the song "Als het weer lente is", at the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 20 March in Naples. Marke was chosen internally to be the Belgian representative, and the song was chosen in the national final on 13 February. Marke had previously finished second in the Belgian preselection in 1963. There was a minor controversy after the selection when it came to light that "Als het weer lente is" had previously been performed on TV (by the following year's Belgian representative Tonia), but after some deliberation broadcaster BRT decided not to disqualify the song, as none of the rules of the European Broadcasting Union in effect at the time regarding song selection had been broken.
