Tongue River (North Dakota)
The Tongue River is a U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map accessed June 8, 2011 tributary of the Pembina River in northeastern North Dakota in the United States. It drains an area of the prairie country near the Canada–US border in the extreme northeast corner of the state in the watershed of the Red River. It rises in eastern Cavalier County and flows in a direct course east-northeast into Pembina County, passing the towns of Cavalier, Neche and Bathgate. It joins the Pembina from the south approximately upstream from the mouth of the Pembina on the Red River. Upstream of Cavalier, the river passes through Icelandic State Park, where Renwick Dam causes it to form Lake Renwick. Below the dam, foot trails follow the river in the Gunlogson Arboretum Nature Preserve. The tongue is a muscular organ in the mouth of a typical tetrapod. It manipulates food for mastication and swallowing as part of the digestive process, and is the primary organ of taste. The tongue's upper surface (dorsum) is covered by taste buds housed in numerous lingual papillae. It is sensitive and kept moist by saliva and is richly supplied with nerves and blood vessels. Neche ( ) is a city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. It sits on the banks of the Pembina River. The population was 344 at the 2020 census. History Neche was laid out in 1882. The name is said to come from the Ojibwe word ''nidji'', which means friend, neighbor, or one like myself. William L. Walton built automobiles in Neche from 1902 to 1906. Icelandic State Park is a public recreation area on the north shore of Lake Renwick, west of Cavalier in Akra Township, Pembina County, North Dakota. The state park encompasses more than , two hundred of which are wooded. The park features a beach, museum, historic buildings, the Pioneer Heritage Center, and the Gunlogson State Nature Preserve. History The park was established in 1964 to preserve evidence of North Dakota's Icelandic heritage after G. B. Gunlogson (1887-1983) donated of his family's lands to the state in 1963. The land had been in the Gunlogson family for over 80 years when it was donated to North Dakota. Activities The park offers camping, fishing, swimming, kayaking, and boating. The nature preserve has three miles of trails for hiking and cross-country skiing. The 6-mile-long Cavlandic Trail connects the park and the city of Cavalier. Renwick Dam
Renwick Dam (National ID # ND00054) is a dam in Akra Township, Pembina County, North Dakota, USA, in the northeastern corner of the state. The earthen dam was completed in 1962 at a height of and a length of at its crest. It impounds the Tongue River for flood control and recreation. Both dam and reservoir are owned and operated by the Pembina County Water Resource District. The reservoir it creates, Lake Renwick, has a water surface of , a maximum capacity of 8400 acre-feet, and normal storage of 1226 acre-feet. Recreation includes fishing and visiting the adjacent Icelandic State Park, established to preserve evidence of the Icelandic heritage in North Dakota. Bathgate, North Dakota
Bathgate is a city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. It sits on the banks of the Tongue River. The population was 47 at the 2020 census. Bathgate was founded in 1881. In 1908, the North Dakota School for the Blind was placed in Bathgate. The building still stands and is now occupied by a publishing company. Bathgate was the childhood home of former world-champion speed skater and figure skater Norval Baptie. History Bathgate was originally called Bayview, and was laid out under that name in 1879. The present name, after Bathgate, Scotland, was adopted in 1881. A post office called Bathgate has been in operation since that year. Cavalier, North Dakota
Cavalier is the largest city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Pembina County. The population was 1,246 at the 2020 census. Cavalier was founded in 1875 and became the county seat in 1911. Although they bear the same name, Cavalier is not located in nearby Cavalier County. The Tongue River flows past Cavalier and Cavalier Air Force Station is located near the city. History Cavalier was laid out in 1875 on open land. The city was named for Charles Cavileer, an early settler in Pembina County (a recording error accounts for the error in spelling, which was never corrected). A post office has been in operation at Cavalier since 1877. Cavalier was incorporated in 1902. In the early 1970s, the city of Cavalier's population quadrupled in size due to the U.S.' anti ballistic missile program. Pembina County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. At the 2020 census its population was 6,844. The county seat is Cavalier. History For thousands of years, various indigenous peoples inhabited the area along the Pembina and Red rivers. At the time of European contact in the 16th century, the dominant tribes were the Assiniboine and the Lakota (or Sioux, as the French colonists called them). The Ojibwe, also known as Chippewa, a branch of the Anishinaabe-speaking language group, gradually migrated west along both sides of the Great Lakes. They developed a long trading relationship with French trappers and colonists. Throughout the Red River of the North area, French trappers married Native American women, and their descendants continued to hunt and trap.
