Tongue River (Montana)
The Tongue River is a tributary of the Yellowstone River, approximately 265 mi (426 km) long, in the U.S. states of Wyoming and Montana. The Tongue rises in Wyoming in the Big Horn Mountains, flows generally northeast through northern Wyoming and southeastern Montana, and empties into the Yellowstone River at Miles City, Montana. Most of the course of the river is through the beautiful and varied landscapes of eastern Montana, including the Tongue River Canyon, the Tongue River breaks, the pine hills of southern Montana, and the buttes and grasslands that were formerly the home of vast migratory herds of American bison. The Tongue River watershed encompasses parts of the Cheyenne and Crow Reservations. The headwaters lie on the Bighorn National Forest, and the watershed encompasses the Ashland Ranger District of the Custer National Forest. The Crow Indian Reservation is the homeland of the Crow Tribe. Ashland, Montana
Ashland is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rosebud County, Montana, United States. The population was 464 at the 2000 census. Ashland is immediately east of the boundary of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation and also along the Tongue River. It is the location of the St. Labre Indian Catholic High School, established in 1884 as a boarding school by a Catholic mission to the Cheyenne. Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation
The Northern Cheyenne Tribe of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation ( chy, Tsėhéstáno; formerly named the Tongue River) is the federally recognized Northern Cheyenne tribe. Located in southeastern Montana, the reservation is approximately in size and home to approximately 5,000 Cheyenne people. Birney is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rosebud County, Montana, United States. The population was 108 at the 2000 census. The post office was established in 1886. History The nearby town of Ashland was called Birney, the name of the postmaster, from 1881 to 1886. The current town of Birney was named for a fur trader. The Battle of Wolf Mountain was fought near present-day Birney in January 1877.
