Tongo Eisen-Martin is an American poet and activist. He is the current poet laureate of San Francisco, California. Biography Tongo Eisen-Martin was born in 1980 in San Francisco, California to a revolutionary mother Arlene Eisen. His parents named him after Josiah Tongogara. Muralist Miranda Bergman is his godmother. He has a younger brother named Biko, and they both attended Meadows-Livingstone school in San Francisco as children. Josiah Tongogara
Josiah Magama Tongogara (4 February 1938 – 26 December 1979) was a commander of the ZANLA guerrilla army in Rhodesia. He was the brother of current Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa's second wife, Jayne. He attended the Lancaster House conference that led to Zimbabwe's independence and the end of white minority rule. Early life Tongogara and his parents lived on the farm owned by the parents of Ian Smith, Rhodesia's last prime minister. It was where Tongogara first met Ian Smith. In politics Tongogara was one of several rebel commanders operating from outside of Rhodesia's borders to free the country from white rule. In 1973 he took over command from Herbert Chitepo of the armed forces of the Zimbabwe African National Union. And in 1975, he put down an internal revolt by members of the Manyika tribe and consolidated that control with the assistance of Mujuru, aka Rex Nhongo. Miranda Bergman
Miranda Bergman is a contemporary muralist and one of the seven women artists who in 1994 created the '' MaestraPeace'' mural, the largest mural in San Francisco, which covers The Women's Building. Work She grew up in the San Francisco Mission District and attended Balboa High School. She now lives in Oakland. In the 1970s, she joined other artists in the Haight-Ashbury Muralists. From 1972 to 1976 Bergman created labor-themed posters with Jane Nordling for the Working Peoples' Artists collective. She worked on a CETA-funded project with other artists to paint murals in the city jail. In 1986, Bergman worked with Juana Alicia, Hector Noel Méndez, Ariella Seidenberg, and Arch Williams to create the mural ''El Amancer'' (''The Dawn'') in a park in Managua, Nicaragua.
