Toney, Alabama
Toney is an unincorporated community in the northwestern part of Madison County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. According to "Appointment of Postmasters, 1832 - September 30, 1971" from the National Archive, the post office was established in 1898. Blanche Rawls Toney was the first post master, and Toney is said to have been named in her honor, probably by James E. Toney, her husband. According to an article from Wed. June 14, 1899 Huntsville Weekly Democrat, as "Toney" the town was established in 1897 through the efforts of "Jim" Toney. By 1899 the railway owned by the "Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis" company was running through the village, and there was a depot there. In addition, there was a gin, grist and saw mill, as well as a blacksmith shop and four stores. The train ran from ca. 1897 to 1929 when it was discontinued due to financial problems of the company. Toney is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, West Virginia, United States. Its post office was established in 1904 by Brad Toney, merchant. Location Toney is generally understood to include the territory along Route 10 above Green Shoal Creek and Abbott Branch extending to the Lincoln-Logan county line. Originally, Toney included territory on both sides of the Guyandotte River. Toney is located in Harts Creek District and is the southernmost community in Lincoln County. Toney Mountain is an elongated snow-covered shield volcano, long and rising to at Richmond Peak, located southwest of Kohler Range in Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica. Toney Mountain is an elongated volcanic massif that rises from a basaltic lava plateau. A wide summit caldera tops the volcano, and is elongated in east-west direction; this orientation is shared with calderas on other volcanoes in Marie Byrd Land and reflects regional tectonic stress. The slopes of the volcano feature parasitic vents and glacial corries, and are much steeper north of the volcano than south of it. Most of the mountain is covered by ice and its eastern sector may be a crater. That the mountain is mostly ice covered makes it difficult to determine its composition, the origin of the elongated shape of the volcano and the volcanological relation between the parasitic cinder cones and the main volcanic pile. Toney River, Nova Scotia
Toney River is a community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located at the mouth of the Toney River in Pictou County. The river has a deep, narrow estuary which has been improved seaward of the Sunrise Trail bridge as a harbor including moorings for about a dozen fishing boats. The community is named after a Mi'kmaq chief who is reported to have signed the Halifax Treaties in 1761. History Captain Toney, for whom the river and community was named, was an Acadian trader, who moored his ship at the mouth of the river to trade with the Mi'kmaq. He sailed along the coast from Quebec to New England exchanging the furs he received from the Mi'kmaq for food and manufactured goods. Black Toney
Black Toney (1911–1938) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, owned and raced by Edward R. Bradley Background Black Toney was bred by James R. Keene's Castleton Lyons Farm. Keene, whose health was failing (he died in 1913), sold all his holdings in 1912 to Colonel Edward R. Bradley's Idle Hour Stock Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. Some confusion occurred over this sale, and Bradley resold most of the lot, but one of those he kept was a very dark brown yearling he named Black Toney. The price tag for the son of future Hall of Famer Peter Pan, whose own sire was another future Hall of Famer, Commando, by the great Domino, was $1,600. Black Toney's dam was Belgravia, the best daughter of future Hall of Famer Ben Brush.
