Ton Van Osch
Lieutenant General A.G.D. (Ton) van Osch (born 1955) is a senior Dutch military commander and past Director General of the European Union Military Staff. Military career Van Osch joined the Royal Netherlands Military Academy in 1974 and was commissioned as an artillery Officer in 1978. After various appointments, including battery command and assignments within infantry, he attended Staff Course in 1986–87 and subsequently served as a long term planner on the Army Staff. Van Osch attended the United States Army Command and General Staff College, followed by a tour as a Lieutenant Colonel and lecturer in strategy at the Netherlands Defence College, during which time he also studied at Leiden University for a master's degree in Public Administration.Press announcement of the |
Royal Netherlands Army
The Royal Netherlands Army ( nl, Koninklijke Landmacht) is the land branch of the Netherlands Armed Forces. Though the Royal Netherlands Army was raised on 9 January 1814, its origins date back to 1572, when the was raised – making the Dutch standing army one of the oldest in the world. It fought in the Napoleonic Wars, World War II, the Indonesian War of Independence, and the Korean War and served with NATO on the Cold War frontiers in West-Germany from the 1950s to the 1990s. The Ministry of Defence ( nl, Ministerie van Defensie; MinDef) is the Dutch Ministry responsible for the armed forces of the Netherlands and Veterans Affairs. The Ministry was created in 1813 as the "Ministry of War" and in 1928 was combined with the "Ministry of the Navy". After World War II in the ministries were separated again, in this period the Minister of War and Minister of the Navy were often the same person and the State secretary for the Navy was responsible for daily affairs of the Royal Dutch Navy. Lieutenant-general (United Kingdom), Lieutenant General Arundell David Leakey, (born 18 May 1952) is a former British Army officer. He was Director General of the European Union Military Staff in the Council of the European Union, Brussels. In 2010 he was appointed Black Rod, Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, a role he held until February 2018. The Military Staff of the European Union (EUMS) is the directorate-general of the European Union's (EU) External Action Service (EEAS) that contributes to the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) by providing strategic advice to the High Representative (HR/VP) and commanding operations through its Military Planning and Conduct Capability (MPCC) operational headquarters. From the end of 2020 the MPCC will also be capable of running executive operations of up to 2500 troops, i.e. the size of one battle group, as well as 3 non-executive missions.
