Ton Pentre Football Club ( cy, Clwb Pêl-droed Ton Pentre) is a football team based in Ton Pentre, Wales, which plays in the South Wales Alliance League Premier Division, the fourth level of Welsh league football. Nicknamed the "Rhondda Bulldogs", the team plays at Ynys Park, Ton Pentre, Rhondda Cynon Taff. Home strip is all red, away strip is all blue with white detail. History The present club was founded in 1935, but there were at least two earlier Ton Pentre F.C.'s, dating back to at least 1896, when Ton Pentre was a soccer-playing island in the rugby union sea of the South Wales valleys. One of the previous incarnations of Ton Pentre F.C. reached the Welsh Cup final in 1922 for the town's first and only time where they lost 2–0 to Cardiff City in Tonypandy. Ton Pentre
Ton Pentre () is a village in the Rhondda Valley in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Historically part of Glamorgan, Ton Pentre, a former industrial coal mining village, is a district of the community of Pentre. The old district of Ystradyfodwg was named after the church at Ton Pentre. Ton Pentre is, perhaps, best known for an event in 1924, when the Duke of York (later George VI of the United Kingdom) played a round of golf with Trade Unionist Frank Hodges. Early and industrial history One of the earliest recorded settlements in Ton Pentre is an Iron Age hillfort located at Maindy Camp. Although initially believed to have been from the Bronze Age, the camp was misidentified due to items from a Bronze Age cairn that were found inside the camp perimeter. Moses Russell
Moses Richard Russell (20 May 1888 – 18 December 1946) was a Welsh international footballer, who played most of his career with Plymouth Argyle. A full back, he attained 23 caps for the Wales national football team. Early career Russell was born in Tredegar, in Monmouthshire and after leaving school he began work as a coal-miner. In his leisure time he played both association football and rugby as well as being a boxer and competent swimmer, once rescuing a drowning child from a river. His first professional club was Ton Pentre, whom he joined in 1911 before transferring to Merthyr Town later that year. Whilst with Merthyr Town, Russell helped them win the South Wales & Monmouthshire FA Cup. He made his debut for Wales playing at left half against Scotland on 2 March 1912. Arthur Trevor Lawless (23 March 1932 – 19 January 2018) was an English professional footballer who played as a defender in the Football League for Plymouth Argyle, Oldham Athletic, Aldershot and Southport. He then went into coaching, and acted as player-coach or player-manager at non-league level. Life and career Lawless was born in Cottam, Nottinghamshire, in 1932, and attended King Edward VI Grammar School in nearby Retford. He was on the books of Football League First Division club Blackpool as a junior, without breaking through to the first team, and also played cricket as a fast bowler. Harry Hanford
Harold "Harry" Hanford (9 October 1907 – 1996) was a Welsh footballer who made more than 300 appearances in the Football League playing for Swansea Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Exeter City. He was capped seven times for Wales at senior international level. In the book by Geraint H Jenkins, 'Proud to be a Swan', Hanford is described as "a muscular, lantern-jawed stopper". Despite having been at the club for only a short time, he is a "veteran" of the Swansea City side struggling under the management of James Thomson towards the end of the 1920s. Alexander Graham Lawless (born 26 March 1985) is a Welsh former professional footballer currently Under-18s Academy Assistant Coach at Luton Town. A right-back or midfielder by trade, he played in the English Football League for Torquay United, Luton Town and Yeovil Town. Lawless began his career with Cardiff City's youth system before playing for Welsh Football League club Ton Pentre. He joined Premier League club Fulham in 2003 and he was released in 2005.
