Tommy Lonsdale
Thomas Stewart Lonsdale (21 September 1882 – 17 March 1973) was a football goalkeeper and centre half. Career Lonsdale played amateur football in Auckland, before joining Grimsby Town in 1908. He played 87 games in his five years at the club, leaving for West Ham United in October 1913 after Grimsby sold him to raise the funds to sign Willis Rippon. After a shaky start to his West Ham career he was dropped, later regaining his place at the beginning of December. On 14 January 1914, Lonsdale was reported missing. After he turned up, the board of directors fined him a week's wages and he was demoted to the reserve team. Lonsdale did not regain his first-team place until the end of February 1914, and that summer he was sold to Southend United, having kept goal for the "Hammers" in 21 Southern League games in 1913–14. Football Battalion
The 17th (Service) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment was an infantry battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, part of the British Army, which was formed as a Pals battalion during the Great War. The core of the battalion was a group of professional footballers, which was the reason for its most commonly used name, The Football Battalion (also the footballers' or players' battalion). The 23rd (Service) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment was formed in June 1915 and became known as the 2nd Football Battalion. The battalions fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 among others. The Old Recreation Ground
The Old Recreation Ground was a football stadium located in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England, and home to Port Vale F.C. from 1913 to 1950. It was the sixth ground the club used. Structure and facilities The stadium was in rather bad condition, especially following years of neglect during World War II. The dressing rooms were bare, there were no toilet facilities throughout the entire ground, and racing pigeons were kept by '' The Sentinel'' and a number of supporters so as to relay the scoreline to different parts of the city. History Port Vale F.C. opened the ground in 1913, and six years later were admitted into the English Football League. Robert Radford (footballer)
Robert Baden Radford (19 January 1900 – 1970) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Brereton Social and Port Vale in the 1920s. Career Baden played for Brereton Social, before joining Port Vale as an amateur in July 1923 and signing as a professional the next month. He made his first-team debut in a Potteries derby match at The Old Recreation Ground on 13 October, which Vale lost 3–2. The following two Second Division games were both against Leeds United, which were lost 1–0 at home and 3–0 at Elland Road.
