Tommy Chesbro
Tommy Chesbro (October 28, 1939 – September 1, 2006) was an Oklahoma State University all-star wrestler and coach. In his 15 years as OSU’s coach, he earned a national reputation as a matchless technician, whose teams won 227 dual meets with only 26 defeats, a 90 per cent winning record. During those years, he coached 20 individual NCAA champions and 20 National AAU and USA Wrestling winners. In 1995, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. NCAA Wrestling Team Championship
The NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships have been held annually since 1928, except for a hiatus in 1943–45 during World War II and in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. In 1928 and from 1931–1933, there was only an unofficial team title. Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) won the 1928 and 1931 unofficial titles. Indiana University won the 1932 unofficial title, and in 1933, Iowa State and Oklahoma A&M were unofficial co-champions. Since 1934, team scoring officially became a permanent feature of the NCAA Wrestling Championships. The NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships is a double-elimination tournament for individuals competing in ten weight classes. Iowa Hawkeyes Wrestling
The University of Iowa men's wrestling program is one of the most successful athletic programs in NCAA Division I. The University of Iowa Hawkeyes are a member of the Big Ten Conference. Iowa is second in NCAA history with 24 National Championships while finishing as a runner-up six times, with each of their championship appearances being since 1975. History Wrestling at the University of Iowa began in 1911 when the first head coach, E.G. Schroeder, led the team in a dual against Nebraska. The Hawkeyes competed in the first Big Ten meet in 1926 under the direction of coach Mike Howard. Howard coached Iowa from 1921 until 1952. David McCuskey took over for Howard and coached the team until 1972 when Gary Kurdelmeier began a four season reign where his teams had an impressive 51-7-5 record. Dan Gable
Danny Mack Gable (born October 25, 1948) is an American former folkstyle and freestyle wrestler and coach. Considered to be one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, Gable is a two-time NCAA Division I national champion, a world gold medalist, and an Olympic gold medalist. Gable was only the third wrestler to have ever been inducted into the United World Wrestling's Hall of Fame in the Legend category. On December 8, 2020, U.S. President Donald Trump awarded Gable with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Early life Gable grew up in Waterloo, Iowa. When he was 15 years old, a teenager from his neighborhood raped and murdered Gable's 19-year-old sister.
