Tommy Bell (footballer, Born 1923)
Thomas Anthony Peter Bell (30 December 1923 – 21 November 1988) was an English professional footballer. A left-back, he played in 318 Football League matches for three clubs, most notably for hometown club Oldham Athletic. Bell features, along with his son Graham, amongst 'The Legends of Oldham Athletic'. Career Born in Crompton near Oldham, Bell signed for Mossley from Glossop in 1946. Playing as a right-back, his performances during his 16 matches led to him signing for Third Division North club Oldham Athletic in late 1946. The fee of £550 was a record for a Mossley player. Bell made his Oldham debut in their 1946–47 FA Cup second-round defeat by Doncaster Rovers on 14 December 1946. He appears to have played well: the ''Daily Mirror'' wrote that Bell "left the field thinking out the miserable tale he'd have to tell at home. Crompton, Lancashire
Shaw and Crompton is a civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester, England, which contains the town of Shaw and lies on the River Beal at the foothills of the South Pennines. It is located north of Oldham, south-east of Rochdale and north-east of Manchester. Historically in Lancashire, the area shows evidence of ancient British and Anglian activity. In the Middle Ages, Crompton formed a small township of scattered woods, farmsteads, moorland and swamp. The ''Daily Mirror'' is a British national daily tabloid. Founded in 1903, it is owned by parent company Reach plc. The 1946–47 FA Cup was the 66th season of the world's oldest football cup competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup, commonly known as the FA Cup. Charlton Athletic, the previous season's runners-up, won the competition for the first time, beating Burnley 1–0 after extra time in the final at Wembley. Matches were scheduled to be played at the stadium of the team named first on the date specified for each round, which was always a Saturday. Some matches, however, might be rescheduled for other days if there were clashes with games for other competitions or the weather was inclement. If scores were level after 90 minutes had been played, a replay would take place at the stadium of the second-named team later the same week. If the replayed match was drawn further replays would be held until a winner was determined. Oldham Athletic Association Football Club is a professional football club in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England, which competes in the National League, the fifth tier of the English football league system. The history of Oldham Athletic began with the founding of Pine Villa F.C. in 1895, a team that played in the Manchester and Lancashire leagues. When neighbours Oldham County folded in 1899, Pine Villa moved into their stadium and changed their name to Oldham Athletic. They won the Lancashire Combination title in 1906–07 and were elected into the Football League. They won promotion out of the Second Division in 1909–10 and went on to finish second in the First Division in 1914–15, before being relegated in 1923. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world.
