Tomahawk (film)
''Tomahawk'' is a 1951 American Western film directed by George Sherman and starring Van Heflin and Yvonne De Carlo. The film is loosely based on events that took place in Wyoming in 1866 to 1868 around Fort Phil Kearny on the Bozeman Trail such as the Fetterman Fight and Wagon Box Fight. In the UK, the film was released as ''The Battle of Powder River''. It is one of the first films to empathise with the views of the native Americans. Plot The story has two main threads: the white fur traders, and their relatively friendly relationship with the Sioux; and the US Cavalry who have a very distanced relationship with the Sioux. The traders and scouts are led by Jim Bridger who has the Indian name of "Tomahawk". A small travelling show run by Julie Madden gets an escort cross-country to a fort from Lt Dancy. George Sherman
George Sherman (July 14, 1908 – March 15, 1991) was an American film director and producer of low-budget Western films. One obituary said his "credits rival in number those of anyone in the entertainment industry." Biography George Sherman was born in New York City on July 14, 1908. At age 14 he sailed aboard the SS ''Mongolia'' to Los Angeles, California, where he found work in the mail room at Warner Bros. studios via a film editor friend. Tom Tully
Thomas Kane Tulley (August 21, 1908 – April 27, 1982) was an American actor. He began his career in radio and on the stage before making his film debut in ''Northern Pursuit'' (1943). Subsequently, he was nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role in ''The Caine Mutiny'' (1954). In 1960, Tully was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the film industry. Early years Tully was born in Durango in southwestern Colorado, the son of Thomas H. James Beckwourth
James Pierson Beckwourth (born Beckwith, April 26, 1798 or 1800 – October 29, 1866 or 1867), was an American mountain man, North American fur trade, fur trader, and explorer. Beckwourth was known as "Bloody Arm" because of his skill as a fighter. He was Multiracial people, mixed-race and born into Slavery in the United States, slavery in Virginia. He was freed by his white father (and owner) and apprenticed to a blacksmith so that he could learn a trade. As a young man, Beckwourth moved to the Western United States, American West, first making connections with fur traders in St. Louis. As a fur trapper, he lived with the Crow people, Crow Nation for years. He is credited with the discovery of Beckwourth Pass through the Sierra Nevada, between present-day Reno, Nevada, and Portola, California, during the California Gold Rush years. Jack Oakie (born Lewis Delaney Offield; November 12, 1903 – January 23, 1978) was an American actor, starring mostly in films, but also working on Theatre, stage, radio and television. Stuart Randall (born Clarence Maxwell, July 24, 1909 – June 22, 1988) was an American actor of film and television who appeared on screen between 1950 and 1971.
