Tom Williams (Negro Leagues)
Thomas Williams (September 9, 1896 – January 19, 1937) was a Negro leagues pitcher for several years before the founding of the first Negro National League, and in its first few seasons. Williams attended Morris Brown College. In 1917, 21 year-old Williams registered for the WWI draft. He lists his occupation as a "Professional Base Ball" Player for Rube Foster. He also lists his home address as 3664 Wabash Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Williams is listed as married and lists his wife as a dependent. In 1918, while playing for the Hilldale Club, Williams was drafted into the Army in Class 1-A. He died in Bremen, Illinois in 1937 and is buried at Restvale Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois Alsip is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,063 at the 2020 census. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum. World War I Draft Registration
The Selective Service Act of 1917 or Selective Draft Act () authorized the United States federal government to raise a national army for service in World War I through conscription. It was envisioned in December 1916 and brought to President Woodrow Wilson's attention shortly after the break in relations with Germany in February 1917. The Act itself was drafted by then-Captain (later Brigadier General) Hugh S. Johnson after the United States entered World War I by declaring war on Germany. Alsip is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,063 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Alsip was settled in the 1830s by German and Dutch farmers. The village is named after Frank Alsip, the owner of a brickyard that opened there in 1885. The village began to grow after the Tri-State Tollway was built there in 1959. Geography Alsip is located at (41.670433, -87.732199).
