Tom Walsh (Dunnamaggin Hurler)
Thomas Walsh (1931 – 5 September 2013) was an Irish hurler. He played with club sides Dunnamaggin and Carrickshock and was an All-Ireland Championship winner with the Kilkenny senior hurling team. Playing career Walsh first came to prominence in 1951 when he won a senior county medal with Carrickshock before later joining the Dunnamaggin club. After lining out with the Kilkenny minor team during the 1949 Leinster Championship, he won an All-Ireland medal with the junior team in 1951. Walsh added another junior medal to his collection when winning the All Ireland title again in 1956, with his brother Jim lining out alongside him at full-back. The pair assumed the same positions for the Kilkenny senior team in 1957. Walsh went on to win his only senior All-Ireland title that year after beating Waterford in the final. Carrickshock GAA
Carrickshock is an Irish Gaelic Athletic Association club situated in the south of County Kilkenny, Ireland. The club was founded in 1928 when the teams from Hugginstown and Knockmoylan were amalgamated in commemoration of the Battle of Carrickshock, 1831. Carrickshock have had success in the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship, winning the competition seven times. Their record of four county titles in a row between 1940 and 1943 remained unbroken until 2009 when Ballyhale Shamrocks won their 4th title in succession. Many players from the club have gone to achieve success with the Kilkenny intercounty team. Leinster Senior Hurling Championship
The Leinster GAA Hurling Senior Championship, known simply as the Leinster Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Leinster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in the province of Leinster, and has been contested every year since the 1888 championship. The final, usually held on the first Sunday in July, serves as the culmination of a series of games played during May and June, and the results determine which team receives the Bob O'Keeffe Cup. The championship was previously played on a straight knockout basis whereby once a team lost they were eliminated from the championship; however, as of 2018, the championship involved a round-robin system. Dunnamaggin Hurlers
Dunnamaggin (officially Dunnamaggan; ) is a small village in the south County Kilkenny, Ireland, on the R699 road between Callan and Knocktopher, east of its intersection with the R697 between Kells and Kilmoganny. Dunnamaggan gives its name to a civil parish, an electoral division, and the townlands of Dunnamaggan East and West. Dunnamaggin has a national school and a credit union. It gives its name to the Catholic parish, which also includes the villages of Kilmoganny and Kells. Leinster Junior Hurling Championship
The Leinster Junior Hurling Championship is a junior "knockout" competition in the game of Hurling played in the province of Leinster in Ireland. The series of games are organised by the Leinster Council. The winners of the Leinster Junior Hurling Championship each year progress to play the other provincial champions for a chance to win the All-Ireland Junior Hurling Championship. Generally, the strong hurling counties have fielded their second team in this competition. In recent years though, they have participated in the Leinster Intermediate Hurling Championship instead. Since 2005, the competition has been suspended, with the counties participating in the Christy Ring Cup or Nicky Rackard Cup instead. The championship began on 12 April 1959 and ended on 4 October 1959. The championship was won by Waterford who secured the title following a 3-12 to 1-10 defeat of Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. This was their second All-Ireland title, their first in eleven championship seasons. It remains their last All-Ireland triumph. Tipperary were the defending champions but were defeated by Waterford in the Munster semi-final. The 1957 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 71st staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 14 April 1957 and ended on 1 September 1957. Wexford were the defending champions, however, they were defeated in the provincial campaign. Kilkenny won the All-Ireland following a 4-10 to 3-12 defeat of Waterford. Rule changes Prior to the start of the championship the Galway county board put down a motion at the Gaelic Athletic Association's (GAA) annual congress seeking immediate entry to the Leinster championship. Since 1922 Galway's hurlers had no competition in the Connacht championship and, as a result, they gained automatic entry to the All-Ireland semi-final every year.
