Thomas Sutcliffe (1828 – 11 December 1871) was an English watercolour painter.Oxford Dictionary of National Biography Sutcliffe, Francis Meadow Sutcliffe was born and lived most of his life in the Leeds area, particularly Headingley.The Leeds Mercury December 16, 1871: Death of Mr T. He was self-taught, but was elected to the Institute of Water-Colour Painters and was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy. He was said to excel at landscapes but also painted figures well, and tended to the Pre-Raphaelite school. His works included a set of over 50 featuring the Yorkshire coast from Hull to Redcar. Thomas Sutcliffe (soldier)
Thomas Sutcliffe (c. 1790 – 22 April 1849) was an English soldier of fortune. After periods in the Royal Navy and then as an army officer involved in the Battle of Waterloo, he became an army officer in the service of Colombia and then Chile. In later years he was a writer. Life Thomas Sutcliffe was a son of John Sutcliffe of Stansfield, near Halifax, Yorkshire, and great-grandson of John Kay, the inventor of the flying shuttle. He entered the Royal Navy, and was on board in the blockade of Corfu in 1809; he was captured by the enemy, but managed to escape to Albania. He afterwards held a commission in the Royal Horse Guards, and was with his regiment at the battle of Waterloo, where he was severely wounded. In 1817 he formed one of a band of adventurous Englishmen who went out to Colombia to aid those fighting for independence from Spain, and was appointed lieutenant-colonel of cavalry in the army of the republic. Tom Sutcliffe (born 4 June 1943) is an English opera critic, author and journalist. He is also a current member of the General Synod of the Church of England, first elected for the Diocese of Southwark in 1990. From 2002 until 2011 he was a member of the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England. Early life Sutcliffe was born in Norwich, and saw his first opera, at the age of 4, at the Kings Theatre, Southsea. He was a boy chorister at Chichester Cathedral, and became head chorister there in 1955, near the end of the period during which Horace Hawkins was Organist and Master of the Choristers. He was educated with a choral scholarship at Hurstpierpoint College and then at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he was a tenor choral scholar and studied English literature.
