Old Tom Morris
Thomas Mitchell Morris (16 June 1821 – 24 May 1908), otherwise known as Old Tom Morris, and The Grand Old Man of Golf, was a Scottish golfer. He was born in St Andrews, Fife, the "home of golf" and location of the St Andrews Links, and died there as well. Young Tom Morris (died 1875), also a golfer, was his son. Early golf career The house where Morris was born no longer exists, but it is thought to be close to 121 North Street, St Andrews. He was the son of a weaver, and was educated at Madras College in his home town. He began golf by age ten, by knocking wine-bottle corks pierced with nails (to serve as balls) around the streets of the town using a homemade club, in informal matches against other youths; this was known as 'sollybodkins'. Thomas Morris (20 April 1851 – 25 December 1875), known as Tom Morris Junior, Young Tom Morris and also Tommy Morris, was a Scottish professional golfer. He is considered one of the pioneers of professional golf, and was the first young prodigy in golf history. He won four consecutive titles in the Open Championship, and did this by the age of 21. Morris was born in St Andrews, the "Home of Golf", and died there on Christmas Day, 1875, aged 24. His father, Old Tom Morris, was the greenkeeper and professional of the St Andrews Links, and himself won four of the first eight Open Championships. Tom H. Morris (9 February 1875 – 25 April 1942) was a professional footballer who played during the 1890s and 1900s, initially for Grantham Rovers and Gainsborough Trinity before making a name for himself as at half-back for Tottenham Hotspur. Career Morris played for Tottenham in the first game played at White Hart Lane on 4 September 1899, a friendly, against Notts County when 5,000 spectators turned up to see Spurs win 4–1. In 1901 he was part of the FA Cup winning team which beat Sheffield United 3–1 in the replay at Burnden Park after drawing 2–2 in the first match at Crystal Palace. This was also the first and only time a non-league team won the FA Cup. Thomas Henry Morris (14 September 1884 – 24 March 1918) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Leeds City and Grimsby Town, as well as in the Southern League for Brighton & Hove Albion. Tom Morris (born 30 July 1991) is an Australian sports journalist who specialises in Australian Rules and cricket. He is the chief football reporter at the Nine Network.
