Tom Jeffery (golfer)
Sir Thomas Baird Jeffery, CB (born 11 February 1953) is a British retired civil servant who was Director General for Children, Young People and Families at the Department for Education. He served as Acting Permanent Secretary on several occasions, notably for three months from December 2011 to March 2012. Early life Jeffery, son of George Herbert Jeffery and Margaret (née Thornton), was educated at King's School, Canterbury, before going up to Jesus College, Cambridge. He graduated from Cambridge with the degree of MA, before further attending the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham. Career Jeffery joined the Civil Service in 1981 in the Department of Education and Science (DES) and was promoted up the grades. In 1998 he was appointed Head of Children Services at the Department of Health, where he served until his appointment as Director of the Children & Families Group at DfES in 2001. The Birthday Honours, in some Commonwealth realms, mark the reigning British monarch's official birthday by granting various individuals appointment into national or dynastic orders or the award of decorations and medals. The honours are presented by the monarch or a viceregal representative. The Birthday Honours are one of two annual honours lists, along with the New Year Honours. All royal honours are published in the relevant gazette. History Honours have been awarded with few exceptions on the sovereign's birthday since at least 1860, during the reign of Queen Victoria. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. Sir Christopher Stephen Wormald KCB (born 30 October 1968) is a British civil servant serving as Permanent Secretary of the Department of Health and Social Care since 2016, having previously served as Permanent Secretary of the Department for Education from 2012 to 2016.
