Tom Forrest
Thomas Wesley Forrest (born April 11, 1952) is a former American football offensive guard who played in the National Football League (NFL) for one season. He played college football at Cincinnati and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the eighth round of the 1974 NFL draft. Guard (gridiron Football)
In gridiron football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is a player who lines up between the center (American football), center and the offensive tackle, tackles on the offensive line of a football team on the line of scrimmage used primarily for Blocking (American football), blocking. Right guards (RG) is the term for the guards on the right of the offensive line, while left guards (LG) are on the left side. Guards are to the right or left of the center. The guard's job is to protect the quarterback from the incoming defensive line, linemen during pass plays, as well as creating openings (holes) for the running backs to head through. Guards are automatically considered Eligible receiver, ineligible receivers, so they cannot intentionally touch a forward pass, unless it is to recover a fumble or is first touched by a defender or eligible receiver. 1974 WFL Draft
The 1974 WFL Draft was the first collegiate draft of the World Football League (WFL). The first 6 rounds took place on January 4, at the JW Marriott Essex House in New York. The final thirty rounds were postponed until February 5. On March 18, 1974, in addition to this selection process, the WFL held a Pro Draft of players from the NFL and CFL. It consisted of 480 selections in 40 rounds. This would also be the last collegiate draft of the league. In 1975, because of the uncertainties facing the WFL, only a Pro Draft of entire NFL and CFL teams was held at its league meetings in Birmingham, Alabama. The 1975 World Football League season was the second and last season of the World Football League. The 1975 season was to be an 18-game season over a twenty-week schedule. The WFL returned with a massive overhaul under new commissioner, Christopher Hemmeter. The Charlotte Hornets were an American football team in the short-lived professional World Football League. Despite their brief existence, the Hornets were North Carolina's first attempt at a major league football team, predating the Carolina Panthers by two decades. They were relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, from New York City in the middle of the 1974 season. History Origins in Boston The Charlotte Hornets franchise began in 1973 in Boston as the Boston Bulldogs, which was also the name of the relocated Pottsville Maroons, Boston's first professional football franchise. The 1974 NFL draft took place at the Americana Hotel in New York City, New York, on January 29–30, 1974. Each of the 26 NFL teams were granted 17 selections for a total of 442 picks. Many experts consider the 1974 Pittsburgh Steelers to have had the best draft class in NFL history as they selected four players later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth, and Mike Webster).
